Best speed from an R40

Wife hates the size of the A31p, but loves the speed and really the screen size. Is there a way to get the R40 to act NOT like a Centrino? I want it max speed or 3/4 max speed all the time. What about the HDD? Its got a 4500 RPM in it, which Im finding very laggy after running the T30 and A31p's on 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM HDDs.
If the R40 cant be made to act like its older but faster siblings, what do you suggest?

The Centrino I believe has only a 256kb L2 cache. For that particular chipset I would switch that Centrino to a P4. The P4 has at least a 512kb L2 cache. A Pentium M Banias would be nice but that is out of the question. You would need a totally different MOBO for that and the CPU wouldn't fit in the socket anyway.

I'd also double whatever amount of RAM you have and put a 5400 HDD in it at least. Minimizing the amount of start-up programs and removing unnecessary programs would also be another must!

It already has the P4, Centrino is chipset, CPU and WiFi card, it gives much better battery life. Dont care about the battery life, Im looking for lack of lag (speed)

No.

Centrino is the name for the whole platform, and it MUST have a Pentium M CPU, not a P4M.

What's the CPU in there? If it's PM, then it's a Banias with 1MB L2 cache, and you can't upgrade it to Dothan on these machines...

The boards that take PM are different from ones meant for P4M, though...

You could 'up' the P-4 CPU to 2.2GHz.
If an R40 is a T30 in another dress, you could even try a 2.4GHz.
With 2GB RAM and a good ~100GB 5400rpm HD, it should run really well.

I meant to say Celeron instead of Centrino.

I know that the R40 comes with either the crappy Celeron w/256kb L2 cache, the Pentium 4 (512kb L2 cache; which can replace the Celeron CPU), or the Pentium M MOBO which accepts Banias 1MB L2 Cache 400mhz processors.

Regardless. A faster hard drive and RAM is what should give your R40 a needed boost.

Already doubled the RAM, but watching NHC, the CPU seems to stay at 600mghtz most of the time. Watching the memory usage its not close to maxing it out, but I can add a 1 gig stick easy enough.

Just over 1 hour, so it needs replaced, but it is far from garbage.

No gripes (so far) from the other side of the room. I just found out that she was running on the battery, which is not fully tweaked out. Made her put it on mains, let see if she likes it.

Freudian slip, I needed help dragging the hot water heater out from under the house...she found all sorts of reasons why she was too busy. But boy was she annoyed when rolled the stupid thing across the front lawn and left it standing in the driveway for three quarters of a day before hauling it off!
