[SOLVED] G40: Numlock key does not work (Windows XP Pro)

#1 Post by brolin_empey » Thu Nov 19, 2009 5:27 pm

I have a ThinkPad G40, which has an overlaid numeric keypad, running Windows XP Professional Edition i386. The G40 has a Numlock status light beside the Caps Lock status light, but the Numlock key is the same key as the Scroll Lock key: Scroll Lock is in large print on the key, Numlock is in small print. I assume this means I have to press Fn+Scroll Lock to press Numlock, but neither this nor any other key combination I have tried will toggle Numlock. The only way I have found to toggle Numlock is to connect a USB keyboard with a dedicated/separate numeric keypad. This problem is annoying because after the software turns on numlock, I have to connect a USB keyboard to turn off numlock. After Windows XP boots, it waits at the Welcome screen, but I cannot log on because numlock is on, which means I cannot type all of my password. I cannot even log on to Windows XP after booting the G40 without using a USB keyboard. Pressing the Numlock key on the USB keyboard toggles the numlock status light on both the USB keyboard and the G40. Why does the Numlock key on the G40’s keyboard not work?

Thanks,
Brolin

To toggle the Num Lock it should be "Shift+Scroll" and not Fn.
Current Thinkpads: 600E, 600X, 701C, A31 (Flexview), R51 (Flexview), R60, T42P (Flexview), TR50E, T60 (Flexview), X61s (Ultralight), Z61m (Ti) Non-Thinkpad: Toshiba 100ct

Thanks, Shift+Scroll Lock works to toggle Num Lock! I never even thought to try Shift because I cannot remember using a laptop where I had to use Shift instead of Fn, but I usually use desktop PCs instead of laptops so I am used to having a 104-key keyboard. :)

On recent models (I think starting from the 60 series), both Fn+ScrLk and Shift+ScrLk work. :)
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U
