A31P CPU Upgrade - FlexView problem

#1 Post by gb_ibmguy » Mon Dec 14, 2009 4:00 pm

Found out an interesting thing (or not, as the case may be) over the weekend. I decided to change out a 1.7GHz processor for a 2.4 in one of my A31P Flexview’s. I had done this before on one of my regular A31’s with no problems.

However, when the unit was reassembled and turned on, I noticed the screen now had an annoying flicker, not a blink; just a flicker, like the refresh rate was set wrong but only when processing data or opening internet pages. Being bold (and bored), I swapped out the 1.8 processor in my other A31P – Flexview with another known good 2.4 CPU. Put it all together, turn it on and guess what, same annoying flicker. Took it apart again and swapped in a 2.0GHz processor, and the flicker went away. I have no explanation. This is with the correct model Intel CPU, higher speed fans, good thermal compound, dust bunny clean out etc.

If anyone has an explanation; I’d love to hear it. Not enough juice to run the display, processor and GPU perhaps?
In the meantime, from this experience, I would not recommend using the 2.4 CPU in a A31P Flexview. Just my .02. (Anyone want to buy a couple of 2.4 CPU’s  )

Are you using SL6VC CPUs?

Yep, Correct part numbers.
Both of the processors had also been in standard A31's without problems. That's why I was so surprised at the outcome. I assume you have not experienced this problem, nor anyone else?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally haven't, not with that CPU.

The worst I've gotten were intermittent freezings with SL6WZ at one time, apart from that I haven't had any bad luck with upgrades of that nature.
