Locked EEPROM

#1 Post by proten » Thu Dec 17, 2009 12:29 am

Hi
I am new to this forum but a long time fan of IBM computers.
But I have a problem and can't find the answer for it anyware.

I had to replace a dead motherboard in a R60 and needed to
rewright to the EEPROM the model & serial #.
I ran the HMD #1.75 and when I go to the update serial & model #
utility , I get a message that the "EEPROM is locked, Try holding the Esc
key at the thinkpad screen".
This do not work. What am I doing wrong. Has any one had this problem.

Paul

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

What you need to do is to press the ESC key during the time that the IBM "splash" screen is displayed. What then happens is that a DOS-like display comes up with messages from the BIOS/system. That will enable the HMD to do its job.

Keep hitting esc until you get to the memory check screen

I tryed hitting the Esc key and got the system check page
but when the hmd started it still said the "EEPROM is locked".
Could it be that I have installed the latest BIOS ver from Lenovo
is why I can't get it to work?

Is there a Supervisor password on your TP?
That needs to be removed temporarily.
Check that you are allowed to change the BIOS, just in case, although the changes you want to make are not IN the BIOS.
Also, you need to delete the 'old' model/serial before you enter the 'new' one.

Hi
How do you delete the old model #?
The "help" is no help and IBM website is no
help too.

Once you get into the program, it shows you options to display, delete or enter data.

Can someone manage to emulate USB Floppy to USB Flash Disk or Bootable CD?

I don't have old floppy in my hand nor in the attic... :(

I made a bootable USB stick with the hmd if that helps.

I believe it is impossible to unlock the eeprom unless you boot from a REAL floppy
