Temperature parameters for R40?

#1 Post by papillon » Sat Dec 26, 2009 7:38 am

Hope everyone's having a good Christmas,
I have a 5 year old R40 on which I have just had to replace the fan/heatsink unit. I guess it's always run hot but was just wondering if anyone knew what the safe maximum operating temperatures of it were. I always have it on a wooden lap tray raised slightly to aid cooling.
According to Hmonitor, 60 deg C is about average.
Also, is there a way to increase the cycle time the fan runs for, the fan seems to run for quite short periods?
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
papi

There's TPFancontrol, that will let you change the fan-behavior.

60C is quite acceptable. Have you put fresh thermal paste on the CPU when you renewed the fan?

Thanks for the reassurance on the temperature RealBlackStuff.
However, I haven't applied any thermal paste, is this going to cause problems?
Thanks again,
papi

BIG PROBLEMS!
Don't switch the laptop on anymore until you have applied this thermal paste.
Go to e.g. RadioShack and buy some Arctic Silver 5.
Once you got it, remove the fan, clean up the old gunk completely, using something like isopropyl alcohol (93 or 99%) from a pharmacy/drugstore.
Then put a small dollop of paste (only the size of a rice corn, NO MORE), and spread that out evenly on the small black rectangle, using a credit card (debit card also works  ) or a razor blade.
Put the fan back on.

Holy s***t!! I've been using it for long periods without the paste! I bought some today and have applied it & reassembled and everything seems to be ok. I did notice that there was about a 2mm square area of what appeared to be, slight pitting on the face of the cpu. I didn't notice this before but having said that, I wasn't looking.
Have I caused any damage?
Thanks for the advice!

Let's put it this way: by using it for longer periods without thermal paste, the whole area around the CPU will have been hotter than normal. These laptops can handle a fair amount of abuse, but heat should be avoided at all times.
You probably did not do any permanent damage. This paste needs ca. 24 hours to properly 'set'.
Then check your temperatures again, they should be quite a bit lower.
