dark area of screen

dark area of screen
please help i'm new to the world of working with ibm's. the left side of the screen top to bottom about 3 inches in the screen is darker than the right 3/4 of the screen does anyone know what this is from.

Is it a well defined vertical band?

As long as we are talking about the "brightness" of the screen and there isn't any distortion of the images on the LCD panel, then I would guess that you have a problem with the backlight (aka, CCFL - a florescent tube) or there's been a change to the diffuser layer inside the panel. That layer basically spreads out the light being generated by the CCFL, usually located at the bottom of the screen, into a uniform glow around the entire panel. If by some chance you have an LED backlight then it could be that one (or more) LED has burned out or been disconnected.
Two questions:
- what system are we talking about (full seven character TYPE number would help; e.g. 2647-ABC)?
- is there any red or pinkish tint to the screen when it's first turned on?

it looks like the back light is out it just looks like you have a piece of light tint on the left side from top to botton from the frame to about 3 inches in

yes it is not hard to see it is about 3 inches wide on the left hand side and runs the whole hight of the screen and gets darker as it goes up the screen
