Is it a well defined vertical band?

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

As long as we are talking about the "brightness" of the screen and there isn't any distortion of the images on the LCD panel, then I would guess that you have a problem with the backlight (aka, CCFL - a florescent tube) or there's been a change to the diffuser layer inside the panel. That layer basically spreads out the light being generated by the CCFL, usually located at the bottom of the screen, into a uniform glow around the entire panel. If by some chance you have an LED backlight then it could be that one (or more) LED has burned out or been disconnected.

Two questions:

- what system are we talking about (full seven character TYPE number would help; e.g. 2647-ABC)?
- is there any red or pinkish tint to the screen when it's first turned on?
