My R60 has firewire?

#1 Post by Weldy2305 » Fri Jan 22, 2010 2:30 pm

I'm a longtime T40 owner who just picked up a used R60. Type is 9457-Y1X. Lenovo support page says this model has IEEE 1394. However, there is now firewire port on the side of the machine and I see no mention of it in the BIOS or device manager. Is there something I'm missing?

If it isn't listed in the Device Manager, then it must be broken or the driver(s) haven't been installed.

I don't know about the R60 but on other Thinkpads I've worked on the MOBO FRU is under the DIMM.

You may want to run the MOBO FRU you find there and see what you come up with.

Please keep us posted on this.

Some R60 systems came with the FireWire port. If there has not been any Frankenpad meausres taken (i.e., the TYPE label on the bottom of the system matches what's in the BIOS), then the FireWire port should be on the left side, back near the cooling vent (page 115 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-64200 ).

Ok new problem. Now when I try to go to the BIOS (push ThinkVantage button on startup) Rescue and Recovery 4 launches. Anyway to go to a menu instead?

Anyway the type matches both on the bottom of the machine and as reported by the Thinkvantage Toolbox. There are no unknown devices in device manager.

Thanks for the welcome. I love my thinkpads this forum is great. I've owned a i series, T40 and now the R60. Love the T series but this R60 is pretty nice too.

To go into BIOS, at boot up press the F1 key a few times.
(F12 for a boot-options menu).

Have you tried running the Serial Number through Lenovos Warranty Lookup? Here is the link.

Entering your Serial here should give you a screen that shows your warranty information... but look for the link that says "view parts lookup results for this system." That should tell you if the Thinkpad you have originally came with Firewire or at least settle some questions.

It might be there, but the port 'cover' was maybe never removed?
Take off the keyboard and palmrest, you should be able to see it then (if there).
This FW plugs via a cable into the mobo, perhaps it has become undone?

I thought the same thing about the "port cover". Curiosity finally got the best of me and I removed the keyboard. Turns out there is definitely no firewire port. Still puzzles me but oh well.

Well, that is strange if model numbers, as you reported, are the same...

You do know you should look for 4-pin firewire port, and not 6-pin?
