T22 Power up problem

#1 Post by zamir-h » Thu Jan 28, 2010 12:58 pm

I tried to power up my old T22 after not using it one year. I have the battery led on, but when pressing the ON button, nothing occurred. Only the HDD Flash once. Trying to do that without Battery yields to same results. From where to start fixing it?

Your problem is called BOD (blink of death).
Plenty posts about that, if you do a search.

Your system apparently has what is commonly known at the "Blink of Death" (aka, BoD). The blink refers to the hard drive LED flashing very briefly when the power button is pushed. No other signs of life is generated by the laptop. The problem is on the motherboard and may be related to one of the power controller chips. This post: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 06#p457906 may hold the clue if you are handy with tools and want to take a chance with the system.

However, I have a couple of T2x with the BoD symptom and what seems to work for me most of the time is to leave the system completely unpowered for several days. Remove the main battery and unplug the AC adapter. You could also perform the magical "capacitor discharge" sequence of pushing the power button about a dozen times and then a final push, holding the button down for 30 seconds. All of this without having any power applied. This is supposed to discharge all of the capacitors on the motherboard but it's never worked for me. Re-install the battery and AC adapter and hope that the system powers up. If it does, then be prepared to transfer any data off the hard drive (unless you have another T22 at your disposal) and to NOT shut it down until you complete that task. Otherwise, you may have to wait a few more days while the system sits around again...
