CD/DVD not found by Thinkpad R40
Hi,
I've been given an R40 2722 and have managed to coax it back to life. It has XP Pro installed and has all the IBM Utilities (I did a restore from the hard disk).
Unfortunately, the CD/DVD in the UltraBay isn't recognized either in the BIOS or by XP. I disconnected the system battery, then reconnected to prompt the ESCD update but no good.
The strange thing is, when I run SIW (system info for windows) it shows the Hitachi HDD as a CD-ROM drive. No CDRom drives show up in the device manager or in PC Doctor.
If I run the Interactive Test/CD-ROM/DVD test in the start-up diagnostics, it says "No CD-ROM/DVD drive or MSDEX device driver installed" (I didn't think you needed MSDEX for XP...)
I read somewhere that the problem could be related to upper and lower filters, although I don't seem to have references to these at the location specified in the registry ( on boot, I get the line "Upper limit segment address: DC00" - I don't know if that has any relevance..)
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: CD/DVD not found by Thinkpad R40
Welcome to the forum!
This is a fairly common problem on R40 units, and basically amounts to a minor motherboard failure.
Test with another media drive, although I'm doubtful that it will be recognised.
Good luck.

Maybe that drive came from another brand laptop, and has been set as Slave instead of Master?
Both Ultrabay 2000 and Ultrabay Plus devices will fit in your R40 (but not the other Ultrabay types).

Re: CD/DVD not found by Thinkpad R40
Faulty drive...
Installed a second DVD drive in a HP DX2200 desktop today (we have 3 of them in the house!), all connected etc set as Slave and had the appropriate Power but XP wouldn't recognise it as the drive is broken (it won't even open!) - I know a HP desktop isn't a ThinkPad but the same idea...
To verify that, you could (if you have one) install in aother ThinkPad or laptop and see if it works. If it does - then it's a problem with the R40 (I never had this problem with my R40...), do what RBS said and check that is set to Master, as it is an IDE/PATA drive (IDE's have masters and slaves)...
Good luck!

Re: CD/DVD not found by Thinkpad R40
Thanks for the suggestions. I've a feeling it's a mobo issue, but I'll try the jumper setting.
Re: CD/DVD not found by Thinkpad R40
Er, how exactly do you change the jumpers? I can't see anything on the CD drive casing that looks like a jumper.
Re: CD/DVD not found by Thinkpad R40
How to change the jumpers...
There should be a bit of plastic on the IDE connecter (on the drive) that looks like this...
http://uploaded.fresh.co.il/2008/04/24/65482408.jpg
Now on the CD/DVD drive there should be some information telling you where the jumper goes on the connector to change it's role, master, slave or cable select, I know this image is from an IDE HDD, but it looks like this...
http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww30 ... C02425.jpg
So then just move the jumper to suit, NOTE - 1) you must set it as "MASTER" if there is only one DVD drive 2) Use the jumper information that is on your DVD drive, not the picture I posted, that's just information to show you how the information looks.
Good luck!!

Re: CD/DVD not found by Thinkpad R40
It's not as easy as that. Some drives come factory preset to Slave, and don't always use jumpers for that.
What's the manufacturer, model and part number(s) of that drive?
