Problem in using a cloned hard drive

#1 Post by versha_prime » Sat Feb 06, 2010 11:18 am

Hi moderator and other senior members (ryengineer....)
Thanks again for all your help and support you have given in the past..
The problem that I am facing now is as follows:

I have thinkpad R51 with 40 GB hard drive.
I wanted to increase this to 80 GB. what I did was I used a hard drive cloning software and cloned my existing 40 GB to 80 GB Drive. It created an exact replica of my existing drive with 2 partitions:
1st NTFS (IBM_PRELOAD) partition of around 62 GB
2nd EISA (IBM_SERVICE) Partition of around 12 GB.
All the files on the new cloned hard drive appeared to be similar to the original one.
How ever on putting the new hard drive and booting , the system just doesn't boot up.
on pressing the recovery button (Blue Acess IBM) the system goes in recovery mode and asks to restore. On selecting an already existing Restore Point which I created earlier on my original drive it does the restore but again on restarting it.. the system again gets stuck on blank screen and nothing appears to be processed further... What could be the problem?
The new disk is read properly because it does show the restore point in rescue and recovery mode... but when it comes to booting the new hard drive just doesn't work.. how can I fix this?

Thanks in advance...

Clone again, but this time install the new drive in the Thinkpad and clone from the original drive, now externally attached. FYI ryengineer has not been on these forums for over a year and a half.

Hi Harry.. thanks for replying.. I have some more doubts..
how will i clone the drive by installing the newone in the thinkpad.. like I said my new drive is completely new and has nothing on it. And all that I have is an external USB Casing for this new drive that will let me access it by connecting it to the USB port...Last time I cloned it using the Drive by installing Clone Pro software...

Is there any specific software that will let me do this....
Thanks in Advance...

You simply need cloning software that will run from a bootable CD. I use Acronis True Image for this. Does Clone Pro allow you to create a bootable recovery CD from the software?

Hi,

I've used this free tool:

http://www.partition-tool.com/

(Home edition is free) to copy my hard disk to a new one.
Worked perfectly.

First copied my original 30Gb HDD to a new 120GB HDD 1:1 (no partition resizing).
Verified Windows XP Pro could boot from the 120Gb drive (which it could).
Then used the same tool to resize the partitions.

Good luck!
Kind regards,

Erik

I have used EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition(freeware), which works like charm, its latest version has added data recovery feature: http://partition-tool.com/partition-recovery-wizard/
This software not only manages your partitions/hard disk, but also can recover your lost files.
