R60 Modular Hard Drive Caddy

#1 Post by ZaZ » Sat Feb 20, 2010 1:51 am

I bought this hard drive caddy on eBay last year. I bought it mainly cause there was no gap in the bezel like there would be with a Lenovo made caddy. Anywho, I finally got around to picking up another hard drive, a WD. It seems that for some reason the caddy is very noisy with the WD. I thought it was the drive and had it replaced a couple times, but they were all about the same noise wise, which got me to thinking maybe it's the caddy. I tried a couple other drives, but they were noisy too. Even my main drive, a Seagate, which is dead quiet in my R60 seemed kind loud too. I suppose it's more insulated being inside the R60, but it was no less noisy. Anyone know of a way to to quiet this thing down or is there a similar product I can buy? Does/did Lenovo make a caddy that would fit the R60 properly? Thanks for any help.

I've seen those without the 2 screw holes in the bottom, and they do 'echo' a bit.
If yours has the screw holes, do you use them?
If without, try one or 2 layers of e.g. cotton between caddy and HD.

Thanks RBS. For a second there it looked like it said Cotton Candy. Anyway, it does have four screw holes in the bottom, but they have screws in there. I tried some cotton, but it didn't seem to help. It seems the bezel isn't well attached. Perhaps that's letting some noise through. It works well otherwise, but the noise is a little annoying as my R60 is near silent otherwise.
