Older A22m
Older A22m
Friend of mine has an older A22m with a 12" screen he wants $40 for. I believe he said it has a PIII 800mhz processor and 128 mb ram.....meager specs...
If I were to get it could the screen be changed to a 15"?
My first thinkpad was an A20 and I like the series but the 12" screen has a lot to be desired...Is $40 too much for that machine? Its in great condition.
Thanks.

No, you can't change the screen to a 15".
And $40 is at the upper limit for such an old machine, unless it comes complete with adapter, hard disk and optical drive...

Re: Older A22m
Well I have an A21m 2628-BCG that was born with a 12.1" 800x600 display.
I bought a 15.1" 1024x768 display (incl. frame, cable, etc.) from some other A2x model, and it fit right on there, it's a bit too wide for the body of the A21m, but everything works fine, the latches fit ok, but not perfectly.
So the answer is not so simple it seems.

Re: Older A22m
I handled a machine that's had this switch done. The main issue is as you describe, but that can be resolved by installing the KB bezel from a 15" LCD machine which leave only one other item to resolve. This bezel creates too much of an overhang for the HDD cover so you'll need to switch to the cover from a 15" machine as well. At that point, I'm not all that certain that the machine would be worth what you'd have invested in it.Adda wrote:Well I have an A21m 2628-BCG that was born with a 12.1" 800x600 display.

I got the screen for about 23$ and the laptop it self was free.
Before the screen switch the A21m was useless, now it's much more interesting.
But thanks for the tips, if I come across free A2x 15" I know what to do

Re: Older A22m
Then you are in a good position with cost of investment. You'll just need to find a derelict 15" machine with the 2 parts you still need. That would be the best scenario, the parts bought individually through eBay (especially the HDD cover), can be ridiculous after shipping. I'll keep an eye out for you here was well.Adda wrote:I got the screen for about 23$ and the laptop it self was free.

If you can get the RAM maxed out to the 512Mb limit, it's a very useful machine still as long as you keep the OS install relatively light. Good luck with your project.

Thank you very much, but I'm not willing to spend more money on this machine, I never use it, it's just collecting dust.schen wrote: Then you are in a good position with cost of investment. I use my A30/p 80% of the time and just spent a lot of money getting it up to speed, it was worth it!
I bought the screen because it was dirt cheap and would completely transform this laptop, it did, it's got a ugly yellowish tinge but it works.
It's functional the way it is now, and will be sold or given it away if I come across someone in need of an old ThinkPad.
But if a 15" A2x lands in my lap I'll get out the screwdriver, tinkering is fun
