Screen/lid swapping advice?

#1 Post by eyestrain » Wed Apr 14, 2010 11:48 pm

I have both:

- R51 2883-GKU 15" xga (like the base, not the screen)
- R51 1830-BQU 15" sxga+ (like the screen, not the motherboard)

I plan to swap screens soon, maybe right away.

If R51 supports sxga+, there's different opinions on that here.

I have the HMM & will go over it first; wanted to post before that to give you a chance to post before I start turing the screwdriver. :)

Will probably swap entire lids, since that's what people say is easiest.

Thought I saw a post that included a link to a video that helps, but can't find it.

Some have said it's ok to skip certain steps from the HMM. But those threads were mainly for 14" models, and usually not R51.

I've opened up Thinkpads to change ram, reseat 600's lcd cable, clean dust, but nothing like this before.

Should I just stick to the HMM?

Any advice for a first timer, and/or for this specific swap?

The R51 type 2883 has integrated Intel gfx and does NOT support SXGA+.

You warned me about this before I bought the 2883...

Please don't take offence, but there are other posts on the forum that say it will work and I have a hope that maybe you're wrong on this one, even though you've helped me on other threads.

If you're right, then either I sell/give the 2883, or if I can figure out how to output a good 1920x1080 external image, almost certainly via vga, I'll probably keep it.

If it doesn't work, what will happen, will I at least see XGA, and know I did the operation correctly?

Only the R52 with integrated Intel gfx can support SXGA+ and that only on 15" models.
Which part of NO for an [R51/Intel gfx and SXGA+] do you not understand?

@eyestrain:

While I have read that an Intel board from R51 will support a 15" SXGA+ LCD, HMM doesn't offer any proof of that, and I haven't tried it myself to state for sure one way or another.

What I have tried is UXGA and will tell you that it doesn't work on an Intel-based R51. The machine can't display anything.

You've got 50/50 chance, which is not that bad. Give it a shot. You won't destroy anything if you're careful.

Now I leave you in somewhat unchartered territory.

Good luck.

Thanks, that does help... sort of. :)

Read thru HMM section and more involved than I expected, even removing Ultrabay parts.

I also have an R60 9461 with a scratched 15" SXGA+ screen, broken hinge, reportedly won't turn on. I plan to take the top half off that one too. If my IPS doesn't work, maybe I can try the R60 screen, just to see what happens. It's supposed to be 42T0349, FRU 42T0350.

Maybe I'll start either today or Sunday.

I see no reason for removing UltraBay parts if you're doing a straight lid swap...

Thanks, yes, looks like that was in HMM just for antenna wire path.

Job wasn't so hard, and worked first try without any issues.

I kept the triangular plastic parts attached to the antenna wires when swapping, and even kept one modem attached. The other modem I removed entirely along with the wireless card, to store in esd bags. If were smart, would have left the other wireless card attached too when swapping, but really that would only save one minute.

Next, upgrade cpu, or repeat with an R or T 60. :)

Unless anyone knows if it's possible to upgrade ethernet to gigabit inside the case? I mean, without using a card that sticks out. I have a working R51-ATI with gigabit, as well as T42p with gigabit for parts.

Nopes. Onboard LAN for all T30 and later ThinkPads. No upgrades there.
