downgrade from vista home to xp home

#1 Post by tkandl » Mon Apr 19, 2010 8:13 am

Hi All -
I have an R61 2.2GHz with 2G of RAM currently running (very slowly) on Vista Home and would like to downgrade to XP Home. Have a legal copy of XP. I really don't want to mess anything up, so would like to have some good instructional advice before beginning this. Thanks

- Have you considered running Vista in "Classic" mode for better speed? (System/advanced system settings/performance/settings/and then tick "adjust for best performance".

This may turn off the nice clear type, but it's easy to re set that in personalize settings.

- If you really want to go back to XP, just purchase another hard drive and install XP on that drive. This way, your original Vista would be available for fall back if need be.

Thanks for the advice. Have ordered new drive. Hope I can download some of the Thinkpad apps from Lenovo site to go along with XP. Thanks again.

Lenovo seems to offer a newer version of System Update 3.x (avoid the 4x series-it is Windows 7 only)

This will poll your machine and offer the items you need. It does not seem to cover everything, however, so it may be necessary to manually install a few.

Why not consider installing Windows 7? You will be impressed. Support for XP will be going away and the speed of Windows 7 is very close to XP. You should have no problems doing the upgrade or a clean installation. Both will work fine...IMHO. Windows 7 Home 32 bit will work fine.

I have almost the same configuration - and XP runs a little faster, and uses considerably fewer resources. And most important (for me) power management is way better than in W7.
You'll only have trouble with the audio chipset driver.
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T

If you do the downgrade, go to XP Professional and not the Home Edition!!! Also, if you upgrade to Windows 7, make sure it is Professional or Ultimate - Windows 'Home' OS's tend to be rubbish.
