Processor upgrade and underclocking a G40

#1 Post by TRON2010 » Tue Apr 20, 2010 2:06 am

Hi everybody! :-)

I just buy a G40 second hand with a Celeron 2.0. Until now, I have for severals years a A31 that the screen was broken :-(. Excellent machine, Upgraded with a 7200rpm hdd, a Draft-N Internal wifi and a 1GB ram. The only problem for me was the USB that are 1.1 too slow. The pcmcia with 2.0 USB don't work well. I decide to buy a G40 because i fell confortable with BIG laptops, because i typping a lot and the G40 have FOUR USB 2.0! :-). I have also a 12" X31 that use when i visit my clients, but is unconrfortable to me for normal work, for the keyboard and screen size.

The problem for the G40 I realized, after the buy, that they mount a Desktop Processor. My A31 have a P4 MOBILE and i supossed that are the same processor, but not. I don't want a machine that make too much noise and run very hot. I have a old desktop machine Pentium 4 at 2.0Ghz, with FSB 400Mhz with code SL6GQ. The TDP was similar to the Celeron, 54 watts. The question is, I can replace the CPU??,I think the mobo was compatible, but what about the bios? after if posible, I want to run a program that undervolt/clock the cpu. Also the P4 have speedstep or something like this, I supose that the celeron don` t have.

I don't receive my G40 yet, and whe I receive it I will upgrade the wifi, ram, and hdd from my broken A31, that is easy to do, but before dissasembly al the machine to change the processor, i want to know if the replacement is posible.

Any help and experience about it are welcome :-)

Thanks for reading and please excuse my poor english :-)

Welcome to the Forum.
These are the standard CPUs that are available in a G40/41:
Intel Pentium 4 processor 2.2/2.4/2.5/2.6/2.7/2.8/3.0/3.07/3.2/3.47/3.6/3.73 GHz, L2 512 KB cache
Intel Celeron processor 2.0/2.2/2.4/2.53/2.66/2.8 GHz, L2 128 KB cache

Bus architecture: 400 MHz FSB
Memory: 333 MHz DDR SDRAM (PC2700)

I would assume that a 2.0GHz P4 also works.

To read up about Pentium 4, see this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_4

If you are not into heavy video-editing and gaming, you might be quite happy with that Celeron CPU that comes in the G40.
It will definitely run a loot cooler (read quieter) than a P4.

Hi and thanks for your answer! :-)

I will work with PuTTY in remote servers and normal Internet surfing and e-mail. No video editing, but yes photo editing. I don't need a horsepower laptop, but yes a confortable one because I typing a lot and a fast USB 2.0 to transfer files betwen external HDD and the laptop. I not a gammer so no problem about the ghz of the processor or the GPU :-)

I would change to P4 not for extra performance. The Celeron runs a fixed speed (not sure) and the Pentium have a "speedstep" or something like this. So I prefer the P4 for run cooler and noiseless the laptop, because I hope to do UNDERclocking the machine (less performance=less heat/noise)

Best regards,

The Celerons in the G40/41 also have speedstep!
