bringing back my G41 from the dead Which OS to install?

#1 Post by winslow » Thu Apr 22, 2010 1:15 am

Getting ready to get my G41 up and running with a new motherboard and HD. I bought a 320 GB hard drive and am debating which way to go with the OS. Debating three different scenerio's and would like some advice if anyone is willing to share.

1. Reload the original OS with the rcovery disks Windows XP Pro

2. Buy a retail version of Windows 7 or buy an upgrade and upgrade after loading XP Pro

3. Partition and do a dual boot configuration of Windows 7 And XP Pro.

Does Windows 7 utilize NTFS or a newer format? If I go with Windows 7 should I format and Partition the drive with partician magic 1st?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you are getting W7 anyway, I wouldn't bother with XP any more.
W7 still uses NTFS.
When installing either XP and/or W7, the install-procedure can partition/format the HD for you.

I don't know your programs, so I can't confirm any.
You need SystemUpdate V4 from IBM/Lenovo to get all the W7 drivers.
You may also need to install some manually, and look at Vista drivers if no W7 version is available.
The hardware should mostly (if not all) run under W7.

Just wondering where you got the motherboard? I need one myself - the FRU 27R1872 one with external VGA.
