login error
login error
#1.
Can someone help me here. I have a Z60m Thinkpad and usually I log in by fingerprint using the fingerprint reader but everytime I try to do that now, I get this error:
cannot create remote instance of class "CID_CaptionDialog" with interface "IID_ClientCaptionDialogGetter" on the server "psserver".
I have to log in by typing in my password which I don't like to do. Help?
#2.
This may be a general problem not specific to my Thinkpad but I'll ask anyway. This is a weird problem. I have Windows XP pro and as you know if you type CTRL + ATL + DEL then it will allow you to lock the computer. But what happens to me randomly is when I am using my computer every now and then it will just go blank. It's not a black screen but when I say it goes blank, I mean that nothing shows on my screen but the wallpaper of my dog. Nothing that I type works EXCEPT if I:
press CTRL + ATL + DEL -> then lock my computer -> then unlock it by typing in my password
after I do this everything goes back to normal but this happens randomly when I'm using my computer. Maybe about once every five minutes. What in the heck is going on here??

Re: login error
hi think*...
Curious ..are you loggin into a Server ? .....when you getting the 'pserver' error??
I dont have a z6* now but I did have similiar issues i remember with FP reader etc
long time ago ,,,(( when I upgraded XPP to Vista Bus))
what I did was 1) totally remove / delete all FP DATA 'registers of fingures'..., 2) UN-INSTALL all FP software 3) reboot , and remove FP software form BIOS ,,,
4) reboot and Download NEW FP software 5) install fresh ( look at reequisits for FP) 5) re register 'fingures' ......
(think those are the steps I did ,,,,,, but in general > FIRST REMOVE DATA , REMOVE APS , ,,, reinstall APPS , re register))
And it worked fine ,,,,
HOpe this helps
cheers

Re: login error
thanks ausmike. What I ended up doing was updating my thinkpad's bios and embedded controller. Then I updated the FP software but it still didn't work so I uninstalled it and then re-installed it. Now everything works just fine except for one thing. I keep getting error 75 when I run system update. I know how to fix it which is editing the registry by changing TP__ to my computer's model number. After I do this works fine but everytime I reboot the registry changes I made revert back to the incorrect settings. You wouldn't happen to know how to make permanent changes to the registry that won't change back when I restart my computer, would you? Thanks again!

Think*....
mate... for whats its worth , I can write a loooong & very lengthy steps as to HOW TO FIX that error 75 ,,,,,however for TWO very specific reasons i wont ...
s) legally , am not supposed to give out solutions via here ,,, for as this means updateing certain OEM(Lenovo prooperiety) items..( I DONT WORK for lenovo!
b) I know there are looots of other MUCH MUCH more smarter pple - especially Lenovo worrkers who lurk here ,,, and yet they WONT TELL YOU - as legally they can ................blah blah
Ok >> first ,,, TVT ( most thinkvantage software) I never use ,,, even SYS UPDATE ,,,, its not worth it > so i would recommend .... uninstall it ,,, and delete all relating files ,,,,,,,,,,,,,
ONCE u update your laptop... its takes like 5-10 mins to MAUNALLY run thru and update the NEWER drivers ,,,, on most TP's... LOTS easier that way.
sorry but hope this helps
mahalo !
in Win7 .... i never use SYS UPDATE

ausmike, in the above link is a snapshot of all the thinkvantage software that I think I have on my computer right now. (there could be more that I don't know of....) Since you don't use most TVT software, can you advise on what software I should uninstall and which ones I should keep? I just don't want to screw up my Thinkpad but there's no need in holding on to useless programs that just take up space.
@RealBlackStuff - Also mahalo for the PM but I will message you a bit later about that. The steps that I have to do aren't very clear to me since I am but a beginner in all things computer related.

Re: login error
think*....
if you running Win7 ,,, I would ONLY keep these two:
power manager
hot key
(and FP reader of cause)
ANYTHING else you can SAFELY UN-INSTALL(via control panel) and you be set
if XP pro ..........make sure you update to SP3 and all rest of updates
then remove (uninstal via control panel)everything else except the same above 2 - PM & Hotkey> as I did have my T6xP series machines with just those 2 and never had any of those 'crappy memory hog services etc etc' ,,,, that TVT often always does.........
Hope this helps
~Malama pono....Me pu oe =take care /good luck ,,, same to everyone~

Re: login error
I just want to be sure again that I'm deleting the correct programs specifically. I am deleting these programs:
Help Center
Lenovo Care System Update
Thinkpad Keyboard Customizer Utility
Thinkpad Configuration
Thinkpad Modem
Thinkpad Power Management Driver
Thinkpad UltraNav Driver
Thinkpad UltraNav Wizard
Thinkpad Active Protection System
The only two Thinkpad programs I will have left is "Thinkpad Power Manager" and "Thinkpad Fingerprint software 5.6". I just want to verify that that is all correct and I should be good to go. Oddly enough, I don't even see the program "Hot Keys" that you mentioned installed anywhere on my computer. Maybe I uninstalled it by accident sometime ago in the past. I'm not sure if I should reinstall it but oh well.

Re: login error
hi think*..
Can you please confirm that you are running WinXP pro SP3...or Win 7
if XP pro - use this link:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... idate=true
If win 7 than use this link:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... idate=true
HOTKEY FEATURE link::
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-74261
Power Manaher (refer to above link - dpending on XP or Win7 use the appropiate one)
Yes you can uninstal all of the TV software ,,, FIRST.... ( reboot as requested) and then do a FINAL REBOOT.... then come back and install hotkey & PM
Then reboot and check and see if everything is working (test touchpad etc) and ONLY install "modeum" software if u ever use that modeum - or else dont bother with it....
If anything dont work - than just ADD the DRIVER(s) from appropiate above LINK - you dont need the TVT software for things( eg touchpad) to work!!
best way to update driver = go to HARDWARE AMANGER > look for items that have a 'yellow mark; and right click on THAT LINE and do "UPDATE DRIVER"....
( if and when it asks u to reboot - than do that EACH TIME (as sometimes the driver might not update correctly)
Hope this is not to confusing ,,,,

Re: login error
ok, ausmike. I have finally uninstalled everything that I posted here and installed "Power Manager" and "Hot Keys". (I also uninstalled FP reader) Everything is fine but I have noticed some changes.
#1.
My folders have changed. This isn't a big deal I guess but the internal layout is different and so far I have noticed that two changes that I made, prior to the big un-installation of files, were reverted back to their original state. Very strange. I have only noticed two changes so far but I am hoping that nothing else has changed. That is going to be very bad news if that is the case later on and I'm not sure what caused that...
#2.
Before I made all the changes I've mentioned, whenever I pressed CTRL + ALT + Delete, I saw a box with six options. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. You know, right? Whenever I wanted to go somewhere, I would press CTRL + ALT + Delete and then Enter and my computer would be locked. But now whenever I press CTRL + ALT + Delete, the task manager appears and I can't lock my computer anymore. How do I get the six boxes back like it was before?
#3.
When I was browsing the internet, after I made all the changes, I had about six firefox windows open with about 30 different tabs. This is normal for me BUT, for the first time ever in my 5 years owning this Thinkpad, my computer's CPU went to 100% and then the entire computer shut down! The computer's CPU going to 100% is fine but I have never ever had my computer just completely shut down on me while I was working on it. What in heaven's name did I do to make this happen??!
That is all the noticeable changes I have observed so far with my "new set up". Explanations, solutions??...
