Please help with G40/G41 CPU's

#1 Post by TRON2010 » Sat May 15, 2010 4:44 am

Hi everybody!

Two weeks ago I buy a G40 celeron laptop. I changed the celeron with a Pentium 4 2.0Ghz CPU take away from a desktop. Very happy with this machine, run quieter than my old broken A31 with 2.0 P4-M, cpu with only 10 watts more of comsume in normal task.

Now I have one new proyect:
In my office they are old and broken cpu that I take the the processor.I have now:

- 3Ghz P4 at 800Mhz
- 2.4Ghz at 800Hhz

I think they are P4 HT (Hyperthreading) because run at 800Mhz FSB

Now my idea is to buy another G40 or G41 to put into a 3.0Ghz HT cpu if possible. My idea is to use it as secundary machine for video editing (mainly traspase from a video format to another my home movies of my familiy, mainly to divx to send it to my parents that lives away) and to compile some C programs that i work faster.

So, I very confused about the different P4 cpus availables.
What are the diferences betwen G40/G41 CPU's? can put FSB800Mhz in all G40 or G41? also wat about 533FSB ?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you for yours answers and please excuse my bad english! :-)

All the CPUs that fit in a G40 or G41 are in the HMM.
They can both take the same CPUs.

Thanks, I see the HMM and is very limited.(My actual CPU aren't)
I think that the G40 its a FSB400Mhz and the G41 is a FSB533Mhz.
I will try the diferents CPU. I hope don't damage the mobo.

Both G40 and G41 are 400MHz. A 533MHz CPU would probably not even boot, and definitely run slower!

So what are the diferrences between these machines ? only that the G41 can have a dedicated craphic card?

The P4 3.0Ghz Prescott HT at FSB800 and 1MB caché don`t boot.
The P4 2.4 GHz HT Northwood at FSB800 work BUT in the procedure a broke the screen connector and now I write from external monitor :-(
The P4 2.4 HT run at 1.2GHz and the operating system (windows XP) Don't run in HT mode (only ONE core).

So I think that the G40 only works with Northwood P4 and maybe the G41 with Prescott.
So G40 max CPU will be P4 3.0GHz Northwood 512L2 and FSB400. and DON'T support the P4 Northwood HT.

I think the G41 it's a different machine because it's support Prescott P4, but it will run hooter, despite have a "mobile" Pentium 4 (not a P4-M that it's the "TRUE" mobile P4 based in Nothwood core)

Now I buy in ebay a new screen cable and i will try to get a G41 cheap to try. I have a friend that works in a large computer store and have a loot of old P4 CPU's that he conserve from old machines that it can leave me to try and can sold these to me at $10USD moreless (9€ Euro) each.

The P4 are a bad designed CPU's, but they are now so cheap that are a good deal, I think.

Like you said, only difference is the removable Gfx card in G41, and integrated Gfx in G40.
These Northwood CPUs will work:
Pentium 4 - Northwood 400 / 2000 - 512K SL6PK
Pentium 4 - Northwood 400 / 2200 - 512K SL6PL
Pentium 4 - Northwood 400 / 2400 - 512K SL6PM
Pentium 4 - Northwood 400 / 2600 - 512K SL6PP
Pentium 4 - Northwood 400 / 2800 - 512K SL74P
Pentium 4 - Northwood 400 / 2800 - 512K SL7E7
Pentium 4 - Northwood 400 / 3000 - 512K SL74Q

Stop trying to run any other than FSB400MHz CPUs in that machine.
The G4x models do NOT use any Mobile or P4-M CPUs.

Sorry but you are wrong, in thinkwiki they say that mount a Mobile Pentiun 4 at FSB533 (Presscot)

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:G41

If I can put a Mobile Pentium 4 Northwood at 3.06Ghz with Hyper-Threading (SL77P) at 533FSB and socket 478, with only 70 watts TPD vs the 89watts TPD of Prescott, I will have performance running cooler and noiseless! (and most battery life) :-)

IMHO the thinkwiki is wrong. But it's your machine...

Here's where the confusion resides: not ALL boards support ALL CPUs when it comes to G4x machines AFAIK.

I'm very doubtful that a G40 board that originally ran a Celeron CPU with 400Mhz FSB will do anything productive with a 533Mhz CPU.

Good luck.

If you see at the HMM, you will find that 3.06/3.2/3.46/3.6/3.73 GHz aren't a 400Mhz FSB CPU's...

That it's true, but the 400Mhz FSB it's for the G40 and the FSB533 it's for the G41. I want put a P4 HT 3.06Ghz Northwood in G41 NOT in a G40....

That was really NOT obvious from your first post...where you wrote:

Because I'm not sure. If you read my first post you understand. I think its clear.

But I if you have the absolute true, why you lost your time with my, a miserable mortal?

Also post your mesage to thinkwiki, that they are wrong and to IBM that they don't know what kind of machine have made... ;-)

My excuses, my english it's so bad that sometimes it's difficult to explain me right.

From the G40/G42 HMM, page 45:
Specifications
The following table lists the specifications of the ThinkPad G40, G41 series:
Bus architecture
400 MHz FSB
HUB link
PCI bus
LPC bus
333 MHz DDR SDRAM (PC2700)

In the HMM same page, up:
---8<--------------------------------
Intel® Pentium® 4 processor 3.06/3.2/3.46/3.6/3.73 GHz, L2 512 KB cache
Intel Celeron® processor 2.4/2.53/2.66/2.8 GHz, L2 128 KB cache
---8<--------------------------------

All these are a Prescott FSB 533 CPU!
Intel® Pentium® 4 processor 3.06/3.46/3.73 GHz : IMPOSIBLE with FSB400MHz!

I post my message asking BECAUSE the HMM aren't fiable for these contradictions!
I was looking for someone that THEY HAVE THE MACHINE and can talk with EXPERIENCE in the REAL WORLD.

I don't try to demostrate ANYTHING! Only want share the experience. I looking for a cheap G41 to try these cpu's.

If you have a G41 machine, please run CPUID and show us the screen. If not, please don't post anymore. Thank you.
