A31p with loose inductors, system isn't starting up

#1 Post by TargetAlpha » Sat Jun 12, 2010 2:08 am

Hi,

first i'd like to thank you guys for all the great infos on this forum. It helped me out quite a bit with several Laptops.

I didn't find anything on my current problem though.

I got a Thinkpad A31p, which at first didn't show any signs of life. So i took it completely apart and found two loose inductors flying around in the case. (the two next to the memory slots "1R5 N22" and "5R2 N23")
I resoldered them and now the keyboard leds turn on. But thats it. No beeps, no picture. The fan isn't even spinning.

So i checked the board again and found another inductor with a bad connection. The one next to the mini pci slot (5R2 N23).
I resoldered that one as well, the fan started running and it gave me the beep code for missing memory.

Thinking that i fixed it, i put in some memory, reatached the screen aaand... nothing.

Again the keyboard leds light up but there are no beeps and the fan isn't turning. I reheated the joints of all the inductors but nothing got it running again.

I think the problem is with the inductor next to the mini pci slot. I noticed that the GPU gets extremely hot as soon as the system is switched on. With the inductor removed the GPU stays cool.
I checked it with an ohm meter and it reads 0 ohm.

Could the inductor be shot? Could it be some other component or bad connection?

Any help is appreciated.

Inductors are usually part of a switching power supply, at least in this context. They are not just filters. With the inductor gone, something in the local PS might have blown, and now that you put it back, it's trying to fry the GPU. Sounds like new MB time to me.
