G series - why so few?

#1 Post by ossadtchi » Mon Mar 07, 2005 5:58 pm

Hello,
I am a scientist and need a desktop replacement.
Was thinking of G41 - read reviews but since there is no way
to check it and play with it before I buy I would appreciate the comments on this machine. I am mostly concerned with the performance, i.e. MFLOPS for operations with matrices. Also, the ability to smoothly switch between the applications, have one running in the background (say, Matlab doing whole bunch of number crunching) without a significant slowing down of the other, I mean without frozen unpainted parts of the screen and other ugly stuff - most of my stuff is on windows.... it has to be....!

Thanks in advance!

The G is a big, heavy machine. I can't comment on it, other than to say I would not buy one because it is big and heavy. I do not mean to dissuade you if you truly wish to buy a G.

One option to consider is a powerful T with a 7200 rpm hard drive and adequate ram. Then get a port replicator, monitor, keyboard, mouse and floppy drive (if you wish one). Put the T in the replicator and you have a desktop (Laptop stays closed off to the side, keyboard and mouse go in front of the monitor). When you are done for the day, shut down, pick up the T and you have everything with you in a lightweight package.

You might consider a T laptop. Multiply the Pentium processor speed by about 1.5 to get the desktop equivalent speed. Check FAQ in my signature which also tells you how to get discounts.

I say that if you want a G series go ahead and get one. The G series is big and heavy but get it if you can handle the weight and if you're not going to be carrying it around that much. The G series is a great ThinkPad(and PC) and I used one before. I actually used a G40 at my school and the G40 and G41 look and are the same(they almost are the same but they do look the same).
I have some pictures that I took of some G's and If you want to see some, send me a private message and give me your e-mail address so I can send them to you.
Another option is to get an R series like an R52(when IBM lists dome on their website) or a T series like a T42/p or a T43.(Both the R and T series have the same components so I guess that you can say that the R and T series are the 'twin series'. At least that's what I think.)
ThinkPads: R51 (1836HAU), T41 (23737FU), 600 (264551U), T60 (2008VRQ), T500 (224255U)

I Love (all) ThinkPads...ThinkPad forever!

I think the key here is that you specifically mention that you want a desktop replacement .. and the G is really the only solution to that requirement. While the T and R series boxes have great video capabilities and speed in a compact package, they lack the ability to be true desktop replacements by virtue of expandability and brute horsepower.

For all intensive purposes, the G41 is a desktop box .. desktop processor .. hyperthreading .. gobs of horsepower and enough ports to plug everything but the kitchen sink in. If your goal it to have a strong workstation type machine without any plans to lug the sucker back and forth to and from work, the price and specs on a G41 are right up your alley.

Just don't expect stellar battery life, or to carry it around with one hand.

Hello.

How is the G-41 performing for you ?

I got one in Jan 05 and will never get rid of it. I got a bit of a problem when starting, mostly SUE and it had to do with loading AOL. That was overcome with the previous client, now runs very fine. A power house too. I just love the four USB ports.

G40 new to me. Fast cheap. BIG

#8 Post by madmaven » Thu Apr 20, 2006 10:48 pm

I bought a G40 sight unseen from a distributor I do business with and other than being shell shocked by its size, it boots up in under a minute and a half with XP Pro , AVG antivirus on it and Ewido anti spy on it. I have a 2.6 desktop with 1.5 ram . this G40 has a 3.0 processor and 512 Ram and it is almost as fast. If I decide to beef up the memory I know it will surpass the desktop... It is very quite. I have installed the IBM battery maximizer and fan controll and have pushed it to high speed and max performance. If you havn't downloaded the utilities you should get the thinkpad installer and update all the drivers, utilities, etc.
SHould I be worried by the lack of fan noise? I havn't really used it much but it seems to disipate heat. Very quite. Have you had heat issues with yours? that is the deal about the pentium 4 and not the M this is a desktop processor running hotter.
I guess I need a CPU temp utility if you know of one>
I basically like the machine and will be using it traveling around this summer in my travel trailer. . Im thinking of taking it on a trip this weekend but it is a beast a nice one but huge.......

I use mine as a desktop. sure I can port it ( as in portable ) but this is not a problem. I move it a few miles and then it stays put for a long enough time. It is quite capable as a system. There has been no overheat problem. I use the IBM provided power maximizer and that is good by me. Did you find it ?

Let me know for the Restore CDs. Just stamps to you. If you are still on warranty, IBM will send them to you if you are not able to burn them yourslef as it is possible in Access IBm. Try it.

me? NoI dont sweat when I type and After the heat gets up and the humidity I keep the air conditioner on. I do like this machine I have been away for a few days and am using it exculsively and it is just great. Now I am eager to beef up memory.
Yes I have the power maximize and all those other nice goodies IBM gives you. I have turned the fan up to high setting for high performance. I just never hear it. In so many other machines I have used I hear the fan loud and clear. . I am out of warranty. no help from Ibm , or maybe yes. when you say access ibm do you mean the partition from the original install???? I do not have that. I thought access IBm was just the user guide???not so??? Or did you mean you meanIf you give me your address I will send you shipping doughand My info when I get home on Saturday. I would be thrilled to have them .That would be very kind of you. I had an oem xp and made a phone call to activate since it would not activate over the internet and the fellow there gave me some hassle but activated it. I would love to be able to wipe it after 6 months to a year or so (maybe less) I keep my personal stuff on disks and try to back up enough so I will never be in major trouble if I loose a harddrive. (learned the hard way)
Ohoh the fan is on. Whew! what a nervous nellie. Double Whew! is really is quiet! Wow> Let me know if you can send the you knows? Thank you so much

I'm curious about the G41:
If it runs @ 3.33GHz Pentium 4 does it performs calculations faster than a Pentium M 1.8GHz??

I'm no expert on p4-m VS p-m, but that speed difference seems to favor the 3.3ghz. I think if it were maybe a 2.2ghz p4-m, the p-m would be faster.

I bought a new G41 with the pent 4, works great. My son hops on it to play games with his brother (over the network), it keeps up with my destop (3400 Athlon), and even outperforms it in some ways.bb

G41 USB ports.

#15 Post by jparrot427 » Tue Feb 27, 2007 9:24 am

Hello all.

I have a G41 and have used it cheerfully for the last 24 months. I recently found out that the USB ports are sick. The two ports on the left are seeing any devices connected but will not use them, it says that it does not recognize them.

The two ports at tbe back are live, the top one is iffy but eventually will see and use a device.

Has anybody here seen/suffered this before and if yes, was it fixed or are you living with it ? I do not very often need the four ports but the side ones are easier to reach. I use the ports specifically to do a True Image backup to an outside USB HD. The cat's meow.

A great day to all. .JP.
