Display problem with R61e??
Display problem with R61e??
I have an R61e with Windows XP SP3. The side of the screen is seeming to flash different colors every so often. Like it gets darker for a few seconds then brightens again.

Re: Display problem??
What GPU (graphics processor) is in your R61e?
Re: Display problem??
I don't know. How can I find out?

Re: Display problem??
Look in the Display properties, under Settings.

Re: Display problem??
Two ways:
- using Device Manager in Windows XP (Control Panel/System/Hardware tab/Device Manager, then click on the Display Adapter line)
- find the TYPE number on the bottom of the system (e.g. 7649-xxx) and plug that into the QuickPath box on this page: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... OME-LENOVO
However, all of that may be moot since it looks like the R61e systems shipped with Intel GMA X3100 GPUs.

Re: Display problem??
Under display adapters it has the same one listed twice. It's Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family.

Re: Display problem??
In that case you have a faulty LCD.
Try pressing (gently) on the spot(s) concerned, when they act up.
You probably have some loose row drivers on that LCD side.

Re: Display problem??
I have noticed though that it seems to be the whole screen rather than just one side. Also when I turn on the computer or when resuming from standby the left side is rather reddish. The reddish color fades after a few seconds.
Re: Display problem with R61e??
I am also noticing a hissing sound. Please any help would be appreciated.
Re: Display problem with R61e??
If none of the artifacts (or redness) show up on an external LCD, then you need a new internal LCD. You can try things like reseating the internal LCD cable at the LCD back and at the systemboard, but based on your description I am also guessing you need an LCD.
Re: Display problem with R61e??
You are guessing I need a new internal LCD, not a backlight? I read somewhere that a failing backlight can cause the problems. How would I go about reseating the internal LCD cable at the LCD back and at the systemboard? Thanks.

Download a copy of the Hardware Maintenance Manual: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 67859.html (15.4 WS) This document contains instructions on how to remove every piece of gear from the system. The LCD connector to the motherboard should be accessible by removing the keyboard. The connector to the back of the LCD panel is harder to get to since you have to remove the LCD bezel and drop the panel out of the lid.
A bad LCD backlight is usually the cause of the reddish/pinkish tint at power up. If the flashes you observe are over the entire screen and is the same color as you see when booting the system, then what's probably happening is that the backlight is flickering off and on. Note that you could also be having an inverter board acting up; it is what provides power to the backlight. Harry's suggestion about replacing the LCD panel is simply because it's easier to replace the entire panel then it is to take it apart and swap out the backlight.
The hissing sound is typically due to a bad backlight but it could also be the inverter. I believe that the sound is actually coming from one of the transformers (coils) on the inverter board. Since you say that the screen has a reddish tint that fades after a few seconds, then that is a definite sign of a weak backlight. That, in turn, could be causing the inverter to hiss.
