New external HD not showing up (fixed)

Seems like a dumb question, but maybe someone can help me: I got a new Hitachi 500GB SATA HD for my Ultrabay, but for now I need to use it in an external USB enclosure (Transcend StoreJet 25 SATA). It powers up and the Properties claims 'this device is working properly' - but it doesn't show up under 'Computer/My Computer'.
Can someone remind me what I need to do in order to have the computer recognize the new drive?

(edit) the machine is an R61 w/ Vista)

(edit) OK, I think I remember.. (I warned you it was a dumb question) - I have to format the new drive, right? (duh!)

'Problem' solved. Installed in the Ultrabay, initialized and formatted and ready to go.

We can fix that too. Just put your brain in a box and ship it to the TPF service center...
