A31 - Problem with USB 2.0

#1 Post by Nirvana » Fri Sep 10, 2010 2:06 pm

Hello

Sorry for my english....

I have an IBM Thinkpad A31 2653 CG8 with windows xp sp3. I have some problems probably caused by USB 1.1. Infact I had some BSOD caused by usbport.sys.
Can I update the USB controller driver to have the standard 2.0??? If YES, can you give me the exact link for download??

Thank You in advance :)

No, this is a hardware limitation.

I use a PCMCIA USB adapter that supports 2.0, that is the way to go with older Thinkpads.

I got a PCMCIA USB 2.0 adapter made by SIIG. Unfortunately, I would still get a BSOD when certain items were connected to it. iPods will do that. My external USB hard drive works fine with it, though. Having the USB 2.0 makes a huge difference when making drive images for recovery purposes. That's one of the big hardware limitations of the A series.

The AKE BC168 USB 2.0 cardbus/pcmcia card is nice because it is flush with the machine (nothing sticks out).

You could also use a full size docking station that has its own power supply, ultrabay and pci slot in which you can put a PCI USB 2.0 card.
