R32 three beeps with memory and without

#1 Post by Temp1911 » Mon Oct 04, 2010 10:59 am

Hello.
Motherboard FRU 91P7840
The screen remains black, repeating three beeps whatever i do. i tried many different memory modules.
POST card shows code 38. Just can't find nowhere thinkpad's post codes.
Memory voltages just ok: 2.47v and 1.25v as reference...
what do you think? what should i check?
Thank you!

Check ACER POST codes, as the R32 was not made by IBM, but under license by Acer.

Remove all RAM, then try and boot.
If the mobo is still (partly) alive, it should beep 1-3-3-1.
If not, I'd say your motherboard is dead.

Remove everything else: hard disk, wifi and modem cards, CD-drive.
Try again without RAM.
If the mobo still does not beep 1-3-3-1, throw it away.
Either waste more money on that oldie R32, or get a more modern laptop.

ok, any worth suggestions? you don't have to be much smart to understand that it doesn't work and need to be replaced, so it there somebody who really repairs boards and know how it works?

I repair Thinkpads all the time, but would not waste any time on a machine of that vintage.
If the rest is still OK, replace the motherboard.
This one ships international and has no bids yet (but finishes in a few hours, so hurry!):

ok mans, now its really not funny. i has ordered the board from previous post on ebay , and today i've receiver it.

IF the first board where makes three beeps with memory and strange beeps without, that new board makes stratge beeps regardless the memory, with and without - just strange beeps. now look, the original mobo from this laptop where works just fine if im pressing the video radeon chip, so LCD, memory and cpu do work! also i have tried other cpus and memoirs.
im going crazy. can it be that two mobos have the same problem with a north bridge?
its driving me craze coz im using to repair boards a long period of time, it's like my work :) and it's not a life cost task to repair them but it's touching my ego :)

Sorry to hear about that. I have no connections to that eBay seller.
If you press on the GPU, and it works, then you need to reflow or reball the graphics chip, possibly on both boards.
There are a lot of posts in the T4x forum about that.
I have never heard of any Northbridge chips going bad in a Thinkpad, the Southbridge is a more likely candidate...
