Z60m - Good power in, won't power on.

#1 Post by HayLo » Tue Oct 12, 2010 12:10 pm

I have a Z60m i'm working on.

Got good power in (not jack) and volatage through out the board. Battery light comes on when battery is plugged in.

No action though when power button is pushed. Swapped keyboards, tried using dock to power it up. Nothing.

Systemboard is clean, no liquid or visible burnt components. Fuses are good.

My guess its a controller chip, but which? and how do i start to diagnosis past the volt meter?

I've been repaining IBM's for 3-4 years now, and i seem to get to this part, but crave to get more working knowledge of what's going on so i can be more useful.

Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like you're troubleshooting properly. I can not help with board level diagnostics, but can offer you one alternative, if your mobo winds up needing replacment.

Turn your Z60m into a Z61m. These machines are very close with many overlapping parts. I did it a short while back and posted the method/results here --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=79477

Also, you're lucking since Z61m mobos are very reasonable these days. This seller has four on eBay for $50 delivered --> http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0270032865

Good luck.

Thanks,

Picked one up for the customer.

Really appreciate your help. Seen this happen before a few times, i was hoping to figure out which component that's failing.

But speed is of essence.

Thanks for your help.
