ThinkPad G40 & WPA2
ThinkPad G40 & WPA2
I just did a fresh install of XP on the laptop. Loaded all the drivers, but it looks like the WLAN driver does not support WPA2, which is what I got at the house.
Under WIRELESS NETWORK SETTINGS I do not have an option to select WPA2.
Is this caused by the incompatibility of the driver with the WPA2?
It's a G40 - 2389-2XU
This is a friend's laptop. Yes, XP is up to date.

Re: ThinkPad G40 & WPA2
Welcome to the Forum.
That G40 came with 802.11b wifi ex-factory, and is probably still in there.
These wifi cards are fast becoming obsolete.
Replace with a newer card that has at least 802.11b/g, and install the drivers for it.
Problem solved.
Pick any card from this very reliable seller in our forum: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=90545

Re: ThinkPad G40 & WPA2
Could I just simply buy a Wireless USB adapter for about $10 to be able to connect to WPA2 secured networks?

For about the same money you get an internal card, why would you want anything sticking out like that USB yoke?

If you really don't want to go inside the laptop to install an internal wireless card, a PCMCIA wireless card would be better than a USB one IMO, because the former sticks out much less, and you wouldn't have to sacrific a USB port.

True, but I'm fixing up this laptop for a friend who doesn't want to put more $$$ into it. He could barely accept the $42 RAM upgrade to 1GB.
I think the USB adapter would be the best solution.

Re: ThinkPad G40 & WPA2
A good PCMCIA wireless card costs only $5 to $7, like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/NETGEAR-WG511T-Supe ... 19c0b771c9tom3k380 wrote:True, but I'm fixing up this laptop for a friend who doesn't want to put more $$$ into it....I think the USB adapter would be the best solution.
Are USB adapters even cheaper than that?
