R51 screen

#1 Post by thinkpad1 » Sun Nov 07, 2010 9:07 pm

I read on the Think wiki site that the R51 has XGA and SXGA screens.

My R51 has the ATI Mobility 9000 card.

My screen res is 1024 x 768. So, I have the XGA screen (res).

But, my screen has a defect. I don't know what one calls it but it's a white streak at the bottom. The rest of the screen looks 'off-white' because of it and the 'streak' is a lighter or 'whiter' white. Some might consider it cosmetic but a little bit annoying as it's noticeable. Screen purists probably wouldn't like it at all.

I am just wondering what my options are. I noticed on ebay, XGA screens for a R51 going for around $100 or more. That's too much for me. Any chance at getting something like that but cheaper in the Marketplace?

If I get an inverter and cable, is it possible to get a SXGA screen? Or should I just stick to the XGA because there's more out there?

What would be a likely price here? I'm curious since this is my only laptop now.

Shipping would be to Canada. Is the R51 panel/screen with inverter/cable fairly common or hard to come across?

Thanks for any info. I want something plug and play or a relatively easy replacement. I thought I can have a SXGA option since the R51 and ATI 9000 combo probably allows for easy install of either XGA or SXGA screens.

You can actually go all the way to UXGA, it's been done before and it works fine.

This, in all honesty, is a steal:

I bought stuff from this particular seller in the past and was very pleased. YMMV.

Good luck.

Is this a 14" or 15" R51? Post the machine type / model #'s from the bottom sticker. It will be a (7) digit alpha-numeric like 2347-3CU.

Turn it off first, right? I'll wait until I have instructions. :)

It's a 15" screen. I wrote down the model number somewhere but I'll probably have to fetch it again.

I guess I'll turn the laptop off and flip it over. I'll post in a bit, the information.

Anyway, here's what I DO know already:
It has 15" screen w/ 1024 x 768 res w/ ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 video card chip. Fujitsu MHT2060AT IDE HDD (60GB). Intel 2200bg wifi card.

OK, well if it's a 15" screen, the LCD George linked to will work. I just wanted to advise you to take a look an a UXGA+ LCD before you buy something like that. Coming from XGA the difference in resolution will be drastic. Text and displayed images (like icons) will be much, much smaller. If you like the XGA LCD that you have, then UXGA+ is not for you.

I had a SXGA screen with the T41. I liked it. But, the XGA screen would be fine if not for the flaw at the bottom right corner (smudge and lighter than rest of screen).

I guess it depends on price and the quality of the screen. With the SXGA, I might want to increase the DPI.

Here's the info on the machine/model #:

My suggestion is to post a WTB Ad in the Marketplace forum for a 15" XGA T4X or R5X LCD panel, or a complete 15" R5X SXGA+ LCD assembly. That way you'll have the right cables, etc. Of course if someone has a complete 15" XGA T4X or R5X LCD assembly for a good price that would be a plus to you.

Just wondering, everywhere else you are calling Thinkpads garbage, but now that you need help with one, all of a sudden you can make decent posts....

Thanks but nevermind. This machine is just as slow as the T41 was. It's painful to use.

I'm not going to invest any money into it. I'll save up for a new laptop which WON'T be a Thinkpad. :|

I bought it when the price went down to 38 bucks. Works great, some scratches on the plastic.
