A22m unable to access AV defs over the net

#1 Post by rwarlick » Thu Nov 18, 2010 3:29 pm

I'm using the Kaspersky AV rescue disk, linux based boot CD to clean up some older IBMz. This laptop is at the lower end of the HW limits (384 MB RAM, 800MHz intel) for this process to happen at all.

The CD does boot, the network module does seem to configure correctly to allow new defs to be downloaded immediately prior to the scan in this linux environment.

The network options are either manual (I'm behind a residential router with cable access) or dhcp. I select dhcp and, like I said, I get a thumbs up on the net config.

The live update fails with the following error message:

"Malfunction, error downloading updates"

Otherwise, I have no issues accessing the internet hardwired or wirelessly with this machine in a windows xp pro environment. BTW, this AV update is a hardwired process.

The BIOS has a few network options to play with with - I haven't tried this yet.

I know there's a good image burned on the CD since the live update/scan works on an emachine w/ 1GB RAM and 1.99GHz AMD.

Please help.

Could it be a faulty hard disk?

What are you actually trying to accomplish?

Cleaning the hard drive? Wiping it? Re-installing OS?

These machines were sold with W98 and will run W2K but running XP is already pushing its limits...

That being said, I see no reason why the updates wouldn't install. Options that these machines offer in BIOS will not get you anywhere when it comes to networking.

Good luck.

Need to run AV on the HD before OS starts - there's a nasty autorun variant hanging out in the root and although a scan by a normal AV will quarantine/clean/delete files, the virus remains.

This is the machine I grab if I need an "old" machine for testing, etc.

Why not just wipe the drive clean and re-install OS?

Wiping HD w/ fresh install is a valid path.

I already know how to do that - I want to learn a new tool.

Hats off on my part. I'd never discourage anyone from attempting to learn something new.

That being said, I really can't help you with the path you're interested in, since my own knowledge of it is non-existant.

Hopefully someone with more experience with the issue at hand will chime in.

Stay tuned.
