R52 no backlight

#1 Post by evimarn » Sat Nov 20, 2010 10:43 am

Hi,
I just replaced the whole lcd assy of a thinkpad R52 lappy initially the problem was lots of vertical white lines but the output on an external lcd was fine, client says that he has accidentally put a powerful magnet next to the leds on the lid and the display went immediately black.
The original lcd was sxga+ non-1ps ati X300 the one he got me to fit in is an xga from a R51 complete assy.
After putting it together the display shows fine on shining a bright light , but the inverter seems dead it only shows a flicker on power on but that is all. Putting back the old inverter has the same problem,so now it seems that I am stuck .Please help out not much hair left to pull out.
Thanks.
Nick

Assuming that the client is paying for the repair again, I'd just throw on another complete lid assembly. I'd guess he shorted out something with the magnet and blew the CCFL backlight. Before you order one though, check fuses around the LCD connector (particularly F3, F7, F8). Here's a diagram.

cheers will try that as soon as I get to the shop, is there by any chance any reed relay which could have gotten stuck by the strong magnet?
Thanks once again.

I don't think the R52 lid close switch is the reed type, it is mechanical.

Hi thanks HarryC, I owe you a cold beer, just as you said F3 was the culprit.
The guy is happy as it is fully functional again.
