Z60t no power

Got a Z60t here that is not getting any power. Symptoms are: Power LED does not light when AC adapter is connected. Power button does not turn on computer. AC adapter output is 20V (nominal), and I have tried other known good AC adapters. The battery is dead and I don't have an external charger to see if the Z60t will run on battery power.

My guess is a blown fuse somewhere. The couple fuses I've found on the system planar are shorted (good) but there are many more that I have not been able to find. Does anyone have a diagram of where all the fuses are located?

Any idea or suggestions on what to check next?

The usual recommendations when dealing with a non-power-up situation would be the following:

- verify that the AC adapter is delivering 16V (older systems) or 20V DC or use a known good adapter, which you have done
- try powering up with only the battery; the DC jack and/or the main fuse may be damaged
- try powering up with only the AC adapter (battery removed)
- try powering up with all of the hardware (except for memory) removed; this means the hard drive, Ultrabay device, MiniPCI card, etc.
- the fuses on the motherboard are identified by "F" numbers; F1, F3, F11, etc. Typical surface mount fuses for the main power look like this: http://www.kawakami-ca.com/images/t22_main_fuses.jpg The one on the left (clear plastic looking with "FU" marked on top and denoted by the "F2" printed on the motherboard) protects the DC input on T2x motherboards. The one on the right (white ceramic with metal endcaps, with "F11" printed next to it) is the type which protects the battery and Ultrabay.

My Thinkpad Z60T just died today. It does not power ON anymore. The case gets very hot at the front botton RHS, just behind the SD connector. Power OFF current is 2A. I disassembled the laptop: on the motherboard, chip U41 is burned wide open, with a V-shaped gouge about 5mmx2mm and 1mm deep in the top; it is burning hot when power is applied. This chip is a large gull-wing surface mount marked "F21618TE110V H8S/2161BV V0516 BD05170" with a sticker BV19. It looks like an IBM custom chip. It seems that all the current -even when the Z60T is OFF- is diverted to the shorted chip, heting it up and preventing startup. Too bad it died: I really liked that Z60T

I believe that the part you describe is the H8S; the hardware controller chip, aka, Embedded Controller, made by Renesas:

If that chip has a crater, you basically have to replace the entire motherboard.

if you go this route, z60t (and z61t) motherboards can probably be found pretty cheap on ebay. I found a z61t with a cracked LCD a while ago for around $30 with shipping. the motherboard was fully functional and is now in a z60t.
