R61e TP and Windows 7 question

#1 Post by dplantz » Thu Dec 02, 2010 4:58 pm

Mine came with Vista when purchased 3 years ago and I cannot say enough how much I hate it. I want to upgrade to Win7 Pro. My questions include:

It says I can just do an upgrade from Vista easy. Is this for real? Common sense would tell me to wipe and re-install, but in the past I have lost drivers and stuff and this is a Lenovo image so am kinda worried about that

This machine a 64 bit system right?

Is there a Lenovo site ( I am an IBM employee) that I can get this on the cheap?

What is the machine type and model numbers from the sticker on the bottom of the laptop? It will be a (7) digit alpha numeric like 2647-3CU. Drivers are not an issue, they can be downloaded from Lenovo again manually, or automatically using their Thinkvantage System Update utility. Specific programs should mostly be available. Which Lenovo specific ones do you use? I would always recommend a clean install if given a choice. As far as actual Lenovo recovery discs for Windows 7, I'd guess that they do not exist, therefore you'd need a retail or OEM copy of Windows 7 to install it. The upgrade version will also work for a clean install from Vista. Make sure to create a set of recovery discs from your current vista install before erasing the drive.
