R52 screen problem - PIC!

#1 Post by madkat » Mon Jan 10, 2011 3:08 am

I came across a decent spec very cheap R52 - but with an issue.
It has the little lines - weird lines of pixels, not blur - on the left side of the screen.
It has Intel graphics - so gpu issue is out of the question.

I have a spare R51 screen, i can swap it, but first i'd like to try and fix this. Where could the problem be? In the mobo connector or something inside the lid? Could it be fixed? Is it worth it opening up the lid assy?

thanks

It's possible that a loose/dirty connection between the motherboard and the LCD panel is the problem. You could try swapping the entire lid assembly (assuming that's what your spare R51 display is) as that's the easiest to do. If you only have a bare panel, then you might want to first try re-seating the LCD ribbon cable both at the motherboard end and on the back of the LCD. While you are at it, look closely along the entire length of the ribbon cable and see if there are any cracks or tears. If this does not fix the problem, then I would say that the next step would be to swap the panels.

I have an entire lid, from my current R51, and moreover - a spare T4x lid - i'll give it a try.
I have never dismantled a lid - but if cleaning and reseating the mobo connector, i'll see what i can do.
About checking the integrity of the ribbon - there is the part covered with black tape, that cannot be checked. Although that is the most robust part of the ribbon.

Yes, leave the black tape alone. There is no sense in taking that apart as you could do some damage.

Opened it up.
Cleaning and reseating the connectors (mobo and ribbon) doesnt make any difference.
With the R51 lid works perfectly - did a fresh install, added 1gb of ram and the 80gb no-error hdd from the R51 (it was originally donated by a t43, so it's error-free), all tre drivers except fingerprint, and all is well.

The original R52 lid works with the same weird pixels on the r51. Tonight i'll dismantle the lid to se what can be done.

Opened up the lid, checked the cable, connection, but no luck. Still the same behaviour...

It's most likely a faulty column driver of the LCD. These are in the (usually green) circuitboard at the top of the LCD.
Very little to no chance to repair that :(

bad news then.
Do you have any idea - the circuit board from the lcd (i understand that is the fault) could be swapped with one from a T4x 1024x768 14' lcd?

I wouldn't even know where to begin.
Since this is all micro-SMB stuff, I doubt it can be repaired/replaced.

No, just talking about removing the whole board (the one on the back of the lcd panel) with the board from a 14'panel

No idea, but I think that is not possible.
The column drivers are attached to one of the layers of the LCD, don't ask me how.
