#1 Post by rockstone » Mon Jan 24, 2011 3:10 pm

IBM Thinkpad A31p

The BIOS battery went dead so i bought a new one and replaced it, but now becouse of BIOS memory loss the computer doesnt know what hardware to start up on, so only thing that happens when i press the power on button is, all the lights light up, but then all of them turn off, but the green (Z) light is still on. and nothing more happens..... what would you recommand me doing?

Thanks

Pull the memory, hard drive, wifi card, optical drive and battery. Hit the power button 10 times for a second, then one more time for 30 seconds. Plug the power back in and try to start it. If it does not beep, the board is most likely dead. If it does beep, try plugging things back in one at a time to see if you can find the problem component.

OK, set the date and time and save/exit. Try to boot now.

Do the same thing again. This time only put one component back at a time and try several reboots and power ups/downs in between each component replacement. Obviously RAM would have to be first. Try one stick at a time ,and try both sticks separately if you have 2. Also try different RAM slots.
