R61i motherboard replacement - compatibility issue

#1 Post by uradjura » Sun Feb 06, 2011 1:59 pm

Hi all,

I have a R61i, type 8918-DNG, and Nvidia chip died.
I want to replace motherboard with one found on ebay. FRU is 42W773
(I don't want Nvidia chip back, I'll settle with Intel)

Is it compatible with my notebook? And can I do the replacement alone (i don't have any notebook servicing experience)?

Thanx in advance for any useful answers,
Marko

Welcome to the forum!

You're missing a digit in that FRU number.

I've provided a link to the HMM in response to your question on Lenovo's forum, but will do it here as well:

Good luck.

Thanks for such a fast response.

Full FRU of MBO is 42W7733, and i can't find any specification on web for her.
I have 15.4 display, and i just don't know will it fit, and, is fitting the only matter that I have to be worried about?

I haven't found the FRU of my actual MBO, and the specs for my notebook on lenovo support aren't accurate, so i'm kinda depending on professional opinion.

I need a cheap solution, and MBO without Nvidia.
Is there any way to be certain that the new MBO is compatible with the rest of my notebook?

Thanks,
Marko

Jup, this is probably a perfect mach.
But it's expensive, and contains that [censored] Nvidia chip.

42W7733 should be appropriate fore some R61i models, u just don't know for which one

Thanks for response,
Marko

Under # 18 you have ALL types of boards listed, both with nVidia and Intel, just scroll down the page...

Not all the board FRUs are listed in the HMM or parts list, unfortunately...so there's research, trial and error involved...

Good luck.

After some research on my part, I'll say that RBS was almost completely correct: that board is for R60e and would not fit in your frame, not to mention that it would present a significant downgrade...you wouldn't be able to use your CPU on it...etc etc...

Thanks for your help,

uradjura: instead of looking at ebay, go to lapstore.de, section Notebook Zubehör, Bauteile, interne Bauteile - they sell replacement boards for a very good price and with 12months warranty :))

I have last wednesday ordered replacement motherboard for T60, FRU 42t0120, payed through Paypal, on friday morning it was at me, the price was 69 euro for the motherboard, 14 euro shipping and handling - my friends mom dropped the unit accidentaly on floor (it was inside a bag, but it was only handbag), nothing cracked outside, but board was gone :(, replacement board is the same as the bad, it has ATI X1300 graphics.

i was given info about lapstore.de on the german thinkpad forum and first buy is very impressive-they are fast and reliable, so i can recommend them for every european user - the firm is located in Münster, Germany :)

You may want to take a look at this thread (I am not sure if the R series is covered, but I would believe it is)
