R60 CPU upgrade...can it be done?

#1 Post by pcengine92 » Sat Feb 26, 2011 12:34 pm

I'm still looking at purchasing a used R60, but the one I'm looking at now has a 1.6ghz celeron M 420 processor. I would be upgrading to a dual core T7100. After looking at the Intel site (ark.intel.com), I see that the chips share the same socket, PPGA478. So the upgrade would fit, but would the motherboard recognize it? As always, any help is appreciated.

It seems that I've found my answer. The mobos that use the celeron processors will not accept core duo chips, but mobos that use the core solo chips can accept the upgrade. A little bit of searching for the answer works wonders.

You nailed it. Plus the T7100 is a Socket P CPU, all R60's have Socket M's. The T7100 won't work in ANY R60 or T60 or Z61.

Which actually represent significant upgrades?

if you mean a performance gain, then you might not notice more than a subtle change. most here recommend ram and an ssd over cpu. that said, if you want to run a 64bit os, you'll need one of these c2d cpus. keep in mind that the r60 is chipset-limited to 3gb of ram, so whether you see any advantage from a 64-bit os is debatable.

that said, i did upgrade the t60p in my sig to the t7600+4gb ram+win7-64, just for the heck of it.

I know that this post is old but; you CAN upgrade your celeron r60 cpu, if you have a R60,not a R60e one:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/R-and-L-Ser ... d-p/777745

from scanning through the ltwbook...

r60 machine types: 9455, 9456, 9457, 9458 & 9459 are detailed as: Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset
r60 machine types: 9460, 9461, 9462 & 9463 are detailed as: Mobile Intel 945PM Express Chipset
for r60e machine types: 0657, 0658 & 0659
looks like the "core" models are detailed as: Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset
while the celeron models are detailed as: Mobile Intel 940GML Express Chipset

If you have a machine with 940GML you´re out of luck. You can use CPU-Z or Everest32 to see what chipset do you have.

All of these are upgradeable.

My boys' R60e - with a 945 chipset, not 940 - is currently running a T7200. Started with a Celeron...
