R40 problem

#1 Post by tony6264 » Sun Mar 06, 2011 1:14 pm

I have not been here in a long time but I have a problem. I picked up a R40 and everything seemed fine at first but after it is on for a little while....maybe 15 - 20 minutes....it shuts off. I have cleaned and even switched the fan and applied new thermal paste.....no difference.
Was this a common problem on these?

Could be tied to the GPU, I suspect they have far more problems than acknowledged. I have at least 3 that are weird.

Hi Ron.....how have you been?
Is the GPU problem with these the same as the Compaq and HP's? Where the GPU has overheated to point where it detaches?
Cause with the HP and Compaq models....everything still works but there is no display.

Not much written about the R40 issues. My completely off the wall testing indicates a GPU issue. I have pressed on, frozen and generally added pressure in the GPU area. Most times it helps. That said it never last long. The most "normal" thing that happens is the unit powers on with no video. They are so cheap to replace, when I need one I pick it up off the bay.
This is where I have gotten the last several I needed.
