Can I upgrade my A20P processor?

#1 Post by Indy452 » Tue Mar 15, 2011 9:54 am

I'm wondering If I can upgrade my A20P processor from a P3m 700mhz coppermine to a P3m 1000mhz coppermine processor? Virtually the same other than the speed right?? I found this one on e-bay and wonder if it would work....

Or, can I use a 1.06 P3m from a R31? I don't know too much about hardware compatibility so I thought I would ask here...Thanks.

A20P uses 100Mhz FSB, so you need a 1Ghz 100FSB chip, later machines use a 133FSB speed and those top out at 1.2Ghz.

So, the CPU you are looking at on ebay is 1GHz @ 133FSB. It might work in your A20P, but it will only run at about 750MHz.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

I think the 133 fsb chip is slightly bigger then the 100 fsb model?

It's not just about the CPU - the theoretical max is 1.0 coppermine - but it's not likely that the board will support it without the modded BIOS...A2x series ThinkPads are very tricky in this respect...

O.K interesting. I guess I'll abandon that idea.....I don't want to take any chances on ruining it.

Thanks.
