I recently bought a refurb R40 that seemed to be well equipped with everything but a 1394 port and at a decent price.
I went to the IBM site yesterday and found that I could run all the updates of all the drivers in my machine with one click. This morning I found that it missed one: Cisco Systems PCI Wireless LAN Adapter. I couldn't connect to the Internet. I needed v. 3.5.13.0 or above but had only an earlier version. On another machine, my iBook, I was able to find the driver, burn it to a CD and load it on the ThinkPad. I can now connect to the Internet via the ThinkPad. You would need to do that download before you run that automatic update. That driver is crucial to connecting to the Internet.
