bATTERY NOT CHARGING ORWONT' RUN ON EXTERNAL POWER

#1 Post by martak » Fri Mar 25, 2005 4:52 pm

I have 2 G40'S and have confirmed that both batteries are ok and also both power supplies are ok but one of G40 will not run on the external supply and also charge the battery. A charged battery works ok in the machine. The question I have is, is there a fuse for the external yellow connector inside the machine for protection since no power is getting to charge the battery or run the G40 maybe the fuse is gone if there is one. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like the AC/DC board...when they go bad, the symptoms you describe occur. If it is a separate board on your laptop than your mother board, it could be replaced easily and it will work again. They aren't that expensive either. You'll have to look at your hardware maitenance manual to tell if the part is part of the motherboard or separate. You can find it here:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... 2p2246.pdf

Hate to tell you but I just looked at your manual (#8 on page 136 which is the mother board) and it appears that the AC connector is part of the mother board. If the problem is as I say it may be, then the only option to fix the issue is to replace the mother board unless the soldered joints of the AC barrel (female) adapter on the board has come loose.

Is your Thinkpad still under warranty? If so, send it back....
If not, then you can open it (as per instructions in the manual) and at least inspect the solder points and see if that's the issue or not.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply and info on the G40. I will read the document and hope there is some sort of fuse protection there. My warranty has expired and since I have two units it was too costly per year to do. But anyway I will look at the unit and hope for the best.
Thanks again

Martak - so did you find out the real problem ?
I have a similar issue with the R50 Thinkpad, which is also just out-of-warranty.
The battery does not charge, although the Adaptor & Battery seem to be OK.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

Found a problem with dead R40.... now the sollution?

#6 Post by ElHupeke » Wed May 24, 2006 2:08 pm

My R40 (2681-HSG) is completely dead. With AC power connected no leds light up. No sound ... just nothing.. With or without battery and AC power connected it won't start.....

I checked it and saw that the button that checks that the case is open was gone. (When you lift the TFT is detects it's open and is used for the cover-open switch.)
I opened the cover and saw a piece of metal lying on the mainboard and gave a short circuit on Q5 (which says it's a 4816 thats a 8 pins SMD component)
A piece of the Q5 (4816) is blown away and I need to replace this SMD part.

I checked the Internet for such a part, but I can't find it. When I will replace this part I think it will work again.
Can someone help me with this part or does anybody has a defective R40 mainboard for me, so I can replace Q5.

Hopefully someone can help me.

Kind regards,

Love to work with my Thinky R40
