A31p motherboard - dead or alive?

#1 Post by Mipmap » Mon Apr 25, 2011 10:15 am

So I snagged a A31p off Ebay (seems I've developed an addiction to the UXGA flexview screens - I have two functional A31p's already). Anyway here are the symptoms and what I have done so far:

Symptom:

On power on, fan spins up and keyboard LEDs light (numlock, capslock, etc.) briefly *except* for the power symbol LED, which never lights (this is LED D80 on the motherboard). Five seconds later, fan goes off. Nothing on the screen.

What I've done:

-Found one USB port trashed (middle plastic piece is gone, but 4 metal pins are still present). Verified pins are not touching each other or anything else.
-Pulled everything: CD/DVD drive, Bluetooth, Wifi, CMOS battery, memory.
-Reseated CPU and LCD connector.
-No change in symptom, except I do get the 1-3-3-1 beep code when memory is pulled (is this reason for hope?)
-Tried a different stick of known good memory, same symptoms.
-No visible problems inside or out - actually it is quite clean and overall is in good shape.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum!

Have you tried a known good DIMM one slot at the time?

When you power it on, and press "Caps Lock" does the light stay lit?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I tried a good DIMM in each slot one at a time, same symptoms.

Caps Lock key has no affect on the Caps Lock LED.

One other thing: when no DIMM is installed and I get the 1-3-3-1 beep code, the fan keeps running (it does not power off automatically any longer).

I'm going to say that there's a 99% chance that the board is as good as gone.

Have you tried a different CPU - probably your last chance...

Good luck.

I was getting the feeling I just obtained a nice set of spare parts...

I have another CPU available from a dead A31, I'll give it a shot.

Thanks.
