SSD in R40

#1 Post by badbab » Sun May 29, 2011 2:31 pm

I'm trying to speed up the old r40, and wondering if the ide controller would just bottleneck
an ssd drive, would i basically achieve the same performnace boost with a new 7200 rpm harddrive
I also want an ultrabay for second harddrive. Would the ssd have to go there, or could I put it where the main drive is now.
And in the ultrabay, do I have to use an ide drive, or can I adapt it to an sata

Thanks,

Clifton

PATA SSDs are expensive and relatively rare.
Using a 2nd HD SATA-adapter, your choice is a bit better/cheaper.
Either way, if it were me, I wouldn't waste so much money on such an old machine...
Have you maxed out the RAM (2GB)? If not, that might bring more.

Yes, have 2 gigs of ram. If I can use a sata drive in the ultrabay,(less $$$ than ide), maybe boot from there, especially if faster than main ide, I'd be happy.
I have 2.o processor, machine performs fairly well for a secondary laptop.
Thanks for input

The processor can be bumped up a bit. The HDD can easily go to 7200 RPM. With those changes it ought to fly. Also do a fresh install of XP (if you are running XP) better yet switch to a Linux Distro. Vanilla uBuntu will do everything XP will do, and do it faster.

With PATA main drive transfer speeds, CPU that has only 512kb cache and ATi 32MB graphic card, you're looking at several bottlenecks that cannot be overcome.

I'd advise against spending money on a PATA SSD.

A newer hard drive such as Samsung HM160HC will be quite fast, and won't cost you an arm and a leg.

Good luck.

I was thinking of Solid State as well. Using some of the smaller Linux Distros on a USB flash drive is the fastest I've tested yet (Many different flavors both MS and Open Source, Hell I have even booted Snow Leopard on my R40).
