IBM software installer A31p

#1 Post by daeojkim » Tue Mar 29, 2005 8:00 pm

I just downloaded IBM software installer and there lists A31p as the supported machine type

When I installed it and tried to run it says "Invalid Machine Type"

What could be wrong?

What does the BIOS report for your machine's model number and type?

I can't see where there is a model number and type

This is all I see on the first page of BIOS

>Config
>Date / Time
>Password
>Startup
>Restart

BIOS Version 1.11 (1GET39WW)
BIOS Date (Year-Month-Day) 2004-11-05
Embedded Controller Version 1.04
System-unit serial number 2653xx960*****
System board serial number J1m*********
CPU Type 1.70GHz
Installed memory 512MB
UUID *******************************
MAC address ****************

----------------------------------------

This is all I see on the first screen as soon as I go into the system.
Is there supposed to be something here that needs to be fixed?

Thanks James

Check in the Configuration Utility on System Information> Details> BIOS Information.

When you go to the IBM support site and click on the link to "Auto-lookup" your model, what happens?

Does it complete correctly or does it fail?

There's a feedback button on the page, click on it and ask them to add your model number (2653-xx9) to the software installer database. A lot of refurbed units were left out.

I have it directly from the guy that wrote the installer that he'll update the info in 24 hours.

I am a bit confused given the first post. The software installer has to run first before it will check any data base. I had to have my vendor add the correct serial and model number for a client machine that had the system board replaced. Only then did the software installer run so that it could go and check out on the web.

So does the fact the the guy who wrote the installer have to issue a new version of it to cover refurbs? ... JD Hurst

This is your problem. It needs to be fixed with the maintenance disk. Make sure you put your model and serial number in all uppercase.

How software installer works

#12 Post by strangethinker » Thu Apr 14, 2005 7:32 pm

Software installer queries the IBM support site with the MT and Model that is listed in your BIOS. If that information is not correct, it will not work.

To fix it you have to do one of two things. Update your BIOS information so that the MT and Model are in upper case and match the MT and Model listed on the bottom of your system.

If the MT in your BIOS does match what is on the bottom of your system use the feedback button on the support site and ask this this model get added to the database.

A31p Invalid Machine Type Error with software Installer

#13 Post by geeve » Tue Apr 19, 2005 6:05 pm

Hi James,

I seem to be having the same problem as some of the other people on this board and i can't seem to resolve the issue.

I have an A31p and everytime i run the software installer it gives me an invalid machine type error.

I read some previous posts and you had asked to check the system information and it seems mine has the machine type missing.(see below)

I just did the latest bios update but that didn't fix the problem either.

System details
BIOS version: 1.12 (1GET40WW)
BIOS date : 2005-04-05
Embedded controller version: 1.04
Machine type-Model:
System unit serial number:
System board serial number: J1XXXXXXXXX

When i go onto the IBM web site and do an auto detect the site returns an error saying it cannot detect the machine...

How do i update the bios to resolve this?
Is there a hardware maintenance disk for the A31p?

Please help...
