You're going to have to explain this in more detail because I do not understand what you are saying. What model drive was in there when you checked?. There are no rules for hard drive parts in an R40 other than it has to be an IDE laptop hard drive. Capacity does not matter.

HI
Sorry,My English is poor. I try to simply show my probelm.
I insert a HD to my R40 , The HD model is "IC25N040ATCS04-0" (IBM FRU: 08K9683), but I check it from BIOS, the model show "IC35O050ATCS14-0! ! ! ! ! (PM)". I do not know why the model change and add "!!!!!(PM)".
I try to re-run BIOS update (the last version) or downgrade...but I always get the same result.

PM = Primary Master, which is exactly what the hard drive is supposed to be...everything else doesn't really matter.

Is the drive itself functional?

Yes, I try to insert the HD to another notebook (T41p), and it work fine.
Besides, I use another HD , I also get same result (incorrect model information)in the BIOS utility.

If my R40 BIOS was bad or virus installed ?

No virus or bad BIOS.
Please don't forget that R40 was not made by IBM, but was built under license by ACER.
Hence the machine is different from 'standard' Thinkpads, and may have some oddities in the BIOS not normally found.
If the HD works, who really cares what it shows as in the BIOS?

Good idea, those R40 are getting to be antiques!
