R52 hangs, if you tilt it or move the screen it comes back!!

#1 Post by niftypixel » Sun Jun 19, 2011 1:07 am

I'm sorry for thread-digging, but this is happening to my R52 now. I've removed the hdd entirely, and it's still doing it (in Bios menu, at password prompt, in DSL OS & Knoppix Live CD) I was almost positive it was a hdd issue, but now I'm positive it's not! :(

I've been googling around for a long time, and I saved bumping this thread as a last resort. What on earth could be causing this very VERY unusual behavior!.

Issues are the same as original posters. It will freeze until you shift it, tilt it a bit, etc etc (and even once you've found a sweet spot, and propped it up to that angle, it will eventually freeze until you move it again to a new angle, etc lol).. I originally thought it was the 'Active Protection' stuff that locks hdd for protection, but after reading a bit more, this doesn't become 'active' until you hit the OS itself, so that can't be it, and as said, I've removed HDD entirely and still it happens.

Any thoughts on this? It's driving me insane. It just started happening last night out of nowhere :(

----- EDIT -----
Upon even further googling (better keywords I guess), I found a page that points to GPU (and or Soutbridge) sodering issues. Can anyone here confirm this?.

Welcome to the forum!

Given that it's a R52 we're discussing here, I'd be betting on a Southbridge chip going south.

Thank you very much for the speedy response, once again I apologize for thread-digging, I've searched around this forum a bit and apparently this is a 'well documented issue', my apologies. May I ask if anyone has any knowledge as to how much a replacement for such would run me (for that specific repair and/or if needed I guess an entirely new motherboard). I've checked ebay, and a few re-sellers. I'm not completely PC-illiterate, but I'm not sure if this means I'll need a new CPU too, or can I use the one out of this one? etc. Any idea on costs?.

My model is a 1847 R52.

Lastly, you say in your response 'Given that it's a R52 we're discussing here'. I read this to imply that this is common with R52's? or am I mistaken in my interpretation of your words.

Thank you once again, and my sincerest apologies for thread-digging, asking a question that's apparently well documented, and posting about a R52 in the wrong category! :(

1847 R52 is not a valid machine type/model #.

I looked on the back, it says Model 1847 (it's a R52 though, sorry). 18472FU is it exactly (at least from what I can gather).
