A31p freezes if screen top is moved

#1 Post by mtnman » Sat Jul 02, 2011 6:58 pm

This problem is beginning to get old. My venerable A31p began booting to a dark screen. After connecting an external monitor, I found that the VGA card still worked. I could still use the machine. Ordered another inverter card, installed it and the laptop screen came back up. Few weeks later, the screen went black at boot again. Figured the used inverter card had fried again. Ordered another inverter card, installed it with mixed results. Sometimes the LCD screen would work, sometimes the external monitor would work. Shortly afterward, no display at all. After reading as many posts as I could find, I thought the VGA board on the motherboard was toast. Ordered another system board, swapped in all my existing parts. Booted up and everything runs great. Only problem is that if I move the screen to adjust the tilt, the system freezes. It is a repeatable problem. Any ideas what I missed?
New parts:
system board
lcd screen
lcd ribbon cable
hard drive
Existing(old):
1GB ram

P.S My backup A31p, in the same configuration; is running just fine.
TIA

I'd be guessing along the lines of the connection between LCD cable and the motherboard.

Is there anything else that causes the machine to freeze?

Thanks for the quick responses. The only thing that causes the machine to freeze is moving the screen. When it does freeze, the only way to get started again is to hold down the power button and do a complete reboot. I too first thought that the LCD cable/mother board connector might be the problem. After two LCD cables, two mother boards, and two LCD screens, I'm thinking the problem is elsewhere.

Three usual suspects I'd try to eliminate because they're known to cause freezing:

a) RAM

b) mini PCI card

c) shorted or damaged USB ports.

Good luck.
