R61 powers ON only on battery but not on AC power

I have this R61 which :

> When run on battery alone, powers ON up till the Thinkpad Vantage screen and shuts down thereafter.
> When on AC power (with battery inserted),
>> only lights up the "ac power" and the battery LEDs.
>> does not power ON the system using the power button.

I have been told that there is an issue with the motherboard and it needs replacement however I am not sure.

Can folks around here advise what could be the problem? I would like to do little troubleshooting before I pay for replacement of the whole motherboard.
