R51...really slow startup/shutdown

#1 Post by jerseyvette » Mon Apr 04, 2005 9:52 pm

Hey all...new user here.

Got my R51 about 2 months ago (Pentium M 1.6 w/ 512 RAM). Haven't really loaded anything new on it and from the day I got it, it boots up and shuts down extremely slowly (about 2 mins for each activity). My 3 yr old Dell that I just upgraded from booted up in half the time. Called IBM and they seem to acknowledge this as being an issue. The tech guy had be disable and uninstall IBM's wireless drivers (so XP is now controlling the internal Intel WiFi card)...but that didn't seem to help much.

I know IBM has installed a ton of crap on it which is probably the cause of the "slowness". Any tips/tricks on what I can remove safely or change to get this thing to boot up faster?

Thanks!!!

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm

The article on the above page I found very helful, it explains in laymans terms the configuration and also the dependancies, made it easy for me to shorten start up and shut down time. without messing things up :)

Go to start>run>type "msconfig">ok
Startup tab and disable one item at a time to see if you can be without it.
Free prog called xsetup will also tweak your startup, running processes and system.
Make sure you remove any malware, spyware etc and defrag drive to help startup.
If it runs quickly once booted then it should be useable.
Of course backup data before doing this.

With the info from the above pages you should find some difference in start up shut down time...

I'm still trying to find out what IBM preloaded stuff I need to keep or disable...trial and error I think as there doesn't seem to be a lot of help on it from IBM support...depends totally I think on what machine you have and what you are running...

I don't understand what most of the stuff is let alone what it controls.

If you do come across any helpful info for the R51 I'd appreciate knowing. :)

Thanks for the tips all. I'm pretty familiar with registry editing/msconfig type stuff so I've already disabled most of the unnecessary programs. I'm 99% sure that what is causing the slow startup/shutdown is IBM installed programs (not normal windows ones)...mainly all the crap under "Access IBM".

I called IBM tech support, but they weren't overly helpful because they'd probably prefer you don't remove all of their embedded crap in the first place. Will keep searching and will post results if I can find them.

Another question, if I get fed up enough and remove all IBM preloaded software, does this in any way void my warranty?
