largest HD for R40

#1 Post by achat_2 » Thu Oct 13, 2011 8:26 am

I have an old R40, still in good shape.
I would like to change the HD to have more space and eventually increase speed.
Which is the largest current option for such an old machine?

WD 320GB will work just fine in R40.

The same holds true for any 9.5mm PATA/IDE laptop drive.

Thanks for the fast reply.

Would this one even be a good alternative for a mid-size choice? (just found it suggested here in another thread)

Sure, the Samsung would be an excellent choice. Better in some ways than the WD, just not the largest.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Ok, thanks.

Could somebody please recall me briefly (or point me the right thread here on this forum) what I will need (software and hardware) to copy the content of the old hard drive to the new, without reinstalling XP Pro?
I don't have XP disks for the R40 (I have the T41p version instead) , but I would like the new HD to have the hidden IBM partition on it like the old one.

Is this possible without an optical drive on the R40?

Found this
http://kb.acronis.com/content/2931

so it looks it is enough to have a USB drive bootable with Acronis and a USB bay to place the old drive.
Is it correct?
