Windows 7 Procedure Install in 2022 after (EOL) to get Windows updates working *PICS*

#1 Post by norrinraddhr » Sat Jan 22, 2022 5:40 am

Hello,
have some question about Windows 7 Pro SP1 and Ultimate without SP1. Last year I installed the Ultimate version one of my IBM X60s (1702-3JG) from 2005. and the Windows updates failed. After I manually installed SP1, Servicing Stack Updates 2019/2020, NET Framework 4.6.1, Microsoft Visual C++ 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015-2022 Windows Updates turn on and I installed most of it, some are failed but the important one I installed. Now I get daily Microsoft Security Essentials updates with some Windows updates and everything works like a charm.

My question, is there some procedure to follow to get Windows update to working after Windows 7 installation with SP1 or without in combination with Lenovo Hotfix maybe for Windows 7?

If you are fine with the English version, you can grab an August 2018 updated ISO using the HeiDoc.net Windows ISO Downloader:
https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technolog ... nload-tool

That one will have fewer servicing stack updates to install to get Windows Update working all the way up to the latest updates.

You must select the Windows 7 (August 2018) option on the right hand panel...

I have never set up a Croatian PC specifically, but I have certainly set time and currency to local formats, when using the English US version. Should be OK. I think, if you install Ultimate you can also download the language packs post-install.

Have 2 genuine Retail DVD Windows 7 Pro SP1 and 2 Retail DVD MS Office 2010 Home and Pro versions, the License keys is no problem, only the Windows 7 Ultimate DVD is, because I don't have a license key. I want to use them for installing on two IBM X60s (1702-3JG) from 2005 and (1704-5LG) from 2006 to save keys for another laptops, on Lenovo X61s comes Windows 7 Pro x64-bit (August 2018) version as you suggested.

If you have some advice about Installing Ultimate I would be grateful to you or to follow the steps as I Installed the last one with SP1 and other updates that I mentioned in first post. And thanks for your advice to download Windows 7 (August 2018) version, I will try it soon.

Hi,
does anybody tried to use USB to boot Windows 7 on old IBM X60s, Lenovo T60p or Lenovo X61s successfully?

I have tried ones on IBM X60s and Lenovo T60p with Windows Media Creation Tool to boot Win 7, but after first restart it starts to boot again from the beginning and the loop never stops.

Today I have burned with PowerISO bootable DVD image x86 Windows 7 Pro SP1 (August 2018) but the x64 have 5,48GB so it can not be put on DVD, it must be USB.

Any help is welcome.

You're not just booting the same recovery media again, are you? :P Make sure you remove the flash drive after it's finished copying the files, but before first reboot.

You could use a dual-layer DVD, but it's a waste. I myself used a USB stick (created with Rufus) to install multiple versions of Windows on multiple PCs, and it's generally worked quite well.

Yes, this can be the problem, I didn't remove the USB drive as I always use DVD... :? So, if I understood you well, when the Windows copying updates are finish the USB Flash drive must be removed before first reboot?

Just make with Rufus 3.17 a bootable USB for my recently new catch, Lenovo X61s, can you please check that's everything fine?

If it boots and runs the installer, then it's fine. And yes, you should of course remove it, otherwise it will run the installer again. Some installers have the option of "Press any key to boot from DVD/USB" prompt for this purpose, and if you don't press anything, it will boot from hard drive.

On my old IBM/Lenovo I never use USB as bootable device for Windows 7, always DVD and as you know there is no need for some actions. On Lenovo X270 i7 7500u I used USB and Windows Media Creation Tool for Installing Windows 10 21H2 after few set up in BIOS there was no need for removing the USB drive either.

O.K., thanks for your advice, I will try today on Lenovo X61s to Install Windows 7 SP1 (August 2018), when the Windows copying updates are done I will remove the USB Flash drive before first reboot, I hope everything goes smoothly. :)

A few of my older Thinkpads will not boot from a USB 3.0 drive. Boots fine from a USB 2.0 drive. A couple of years ago I bought a bunch of 32 GB USB 2.0 drives for this purpose for $5 each. Don't know how hard it is to find USB 2.0 drives these days.
Hi dr_st,
just read the topic above about USB 3.0 and my Windows 7 is on Samsung USB 3.1 Flash Drive, so it can be a problem!? Found an old Transcend JetFlash600 16GB Flash drive from 2010, R/W 32/18MB/s, so I think the best way is to put the Windows 7 Pro SP1 (August 2018) on this USB 2.0 FD.

Just to thank dr_st on his advice about USB Windows 7 Install on IBM/Lenovo, I tried and everything works, even the SanDisk USB 3.1 on old IBM X60s (2005), no problem at all. I removed the USB at the first restart and everything else went smoothly. No more noise from CD/DVD drive, fine and quiet, just the sound of Cooler Pad, nothing else as should be. :)

Glad you got it working! The laptop looks awesome. :thumbs-UP: Incidentally, when I prepared the X61 that now serves in my parents' house, I used the same Win7 image. :)

Small information and advice from you, but for me a big help, thanks again. :thumbs-UP:

Yes, I like the IBM/Lenovo X60s and X61s models, they are all in good shape. Last year I have cleaned all the fans from two IBM X60s and X61T and give a drop of oil on vent shaft (Castrol 5W-40) to prevent some problems with fan and they are working fine and quiet, original vents. They all are upgraded to identical Samsung 4GB RAM memory to get symmetric dual-channel speed and SSD Samsung 830 Series 128GB, EVO 840 120GB and PRO 840 128GB. The oldest IBM have now SanDisk 120GB but I will replacing with Samsung SSD. I like the screen 4:3 format and tiny LCD edges, it's my daily laptop and with Windows 7 works like a dream. They are undestroyable and the parts are chep, can you wish for more... :) Some pictures from fan cleaning...

That's a pretty thorough disassembly. I applaud you for the guts and the determination of putting it back together. I would not undertake such an endeavor, unless the laptop was basically broken already.
