black screen, login not appear, problem with explorer.exe

Hello I have a ThinkPad X230 Tablet with Windows 7 Home Premium

I tried to connect an external hard drive to the laptop. Then explorer.exe crashed, and I could not open task manager. I restarted the computer.

Everything loads fine until it's time to load the login screen. It just shows a blank screen with mouse cursor.

I tried system restore and safe mode. System restore didn't fix the problem, and safe mode also results in the black screen.

I can't find a solution on the internet.

I have precious files for the project I am working on that laptop. I do not want to reset to factory settings.

Please help.

On another computer, prepare a rescue disc (http://lifehacker.com/5984707/five-best ... scue-discs). Make a bootable USB of the rescue disc with rufus (http://rufus.akeo.ie/).

This will allow you to copy the precious files before a reset to factory settings.
